Research Intern – Power Network alarm analytics

Hitachi Energy has an opening for the position of Research Intern in the field of event and alarm analytics for future autonomous electric power networks. The hired intern will work under the supervision of Research Scientists in the North America Hitachi Energy Research center (Montreal, Canada). This position will be held remotely in Canada.
Duration of internship:
Fall and/or Winter semester (4-8 months)

Your responsibilities

• Contribute as part of a multi-disciplinary project team to, in a one-semester internship:
• Learn about alarm management state-of-the-art in a relevant industry (e.g., telecom, data-center, process control, etc.) and adapt suitable techniques to electric transmission grid operation
• Enrich application use-cases with input from subject matter experts. Help envision and design corresponding machine learning pipelines for data-, model-, and human-interaction-driven workflows.
• Support training data selection and pre-processing from real alarm and event datasets
• Furthermore, in an optional second semester:
• Design and prototype in Python an intelligent alarm management approach for use case(s)
• Develop experiments and statistical analyses as required to evaluate and compare approaches
• For any internship duration, prepare a technical report, presentation on work accomplished during in-ternship and/or publication in peer-reviewed conference.

Your background

• Must be: Masters or Doctoral students/candidates in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics or Engineering. Masters students/candidates in related fields of study or exceptional undergraduate students with relevant experience are also welcome to apply.
• Must-have: Demonstrated understanding of statistics, data analysis
• Must-have: Coding experience in Python or a comparable language
• Preferred: Demonstrated understanding of machine learning and relevant Python libraries
• Preferred: Experience with discrete or interval event analysis
• Preferred: Experience with advanced data analysis methods such as querying, munging, pre-processing
• Preferred: Demonstrated experience applying machine learning to human-in-the-loop interactions
• Preferred: Excellent communication skills (both written and spoken), prior experience in writing technical reports
