Qualifications
- 5+ years’ experience in project delivery is strongly preferred, ideally working in an Agile practitioner role (e.g. scrum master, service delivery manager, release train engineer) or as project manager
- Experience in process/framework design and management is preferred
- Strong working knowledge of Agile methods (e.g. Scrum, Kanban, Lean Agile) and scaled Agile frameworks (e.g. DAD, LESS, SAFe) is preferred
- Working knowledge of core delivery disciplines is an asset, including software development lifecycle (SDLC), organizational change management (OCM), user experience design, journey/story mapping, measurement frameworks (e.g. OKRs, KPIs)
- Experience in learning/curriculum design is an asset
- Working experience in a regulated industry is helpful but not mandatory (e.g. banking, telecommunications, pharma, etc)
- Demonstrated abilities in the following:
- Impact and influence at multiple levels ranging from executives to team-level practitioners and their managers
- Ability to chart a longer-term strategy with a tactical plan to realize the outcomes
- Ability to facilitate across a group of stakeholders to get things done
- Creative problem solving techniques including root cause analysis
- Ability to manage resistance and courage to challenge the status quo
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with an ability to convey concepts in various ways to boost audience comprehension
- Education/certifications
- Post-secondary education is an asset to the extent it develops critical thinking, effective writing skills, conceptual thinking etc. but is not mandatory
- Agile certifications (e.g. CSP, SAFe, Six Sigma) demonstrate a commitment to the discipline and to life-long learning but are not required
The Senior Manager, Agile Delivery Practices is the steward of BMO’s framework of Agile Standard Practices, used by teams across the Enterprise who carry out change delivery work using modern methods such as Scrum and Kanban. The framework consists of the core activities and artifacts that teams adopt, guidance documentation and templates on “how” work gets done, and the Agile @ BMO Intranet site that serves as the playbook for the organization. This role works across a wide range of stakeholder and sub-process owners to ensure that Agile teams have a complete set of artifacts and activities that manage risk, enable opportunities and are consistent with core Agile principles. Because BMO is still in the early stages of its long-term Agile journey, this role presents considerable opportunity to shape new and innovative ways for the organization to sustainably delivery high-quality products with pace. Main duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Maintains the Agile Standard Practices (ASPs), the core asset that sets out an auditable set of artifact and activities that BMO’s Agile teams adopt. Includes twice-annual major updates along with the associated change communication and training activities.
- Works with a wide network of enterprise compliance and risk groups to ensure that the ASPs support the legal and regulatory needs of a financial institution, while ensuring that the risk-reducing tenets of Agile are preserved.
- Contributes to the ongoing evolution of the Bank’s risk and delivery frameworks, ensuring that Agile principles are upheld. Prime examples include the Agile Risk Directive and the Process & Risk Control library.
- Coaches process groups in the Bank on how to improve and agile-optimize their methods.
- Keeps close contact with BMO’s practitioner community to understand how the ASP either enable or hinder team progress, and uses that feedback to continuously simply and strengthen the practices. integrate innovations developed by individual teams into the ASPs for broader adoption.
- Develops supporting materials (procedures, guidance documentation) to help practitioners at both the team and portfolio level adopt Agile practices in healthy ways.
- Contributes to the ongoing management and organization of the Agile @ BMO Intranet site to ensure practitioners can readily find the support materials they require.
- Promotes the ASP across the organization, either via communication forums or targeted training as required. Responds to inquiries about the ASP from practitioners, PMOs and oversight functions (e.g. corporate audit).
- Supports delivery groups such as PMOs, technology teams and business operating groups as they build their knowledge of Agile methods.
- Maintains and analyses a success measurement framework to guide the continued evolution of the ASP and related materials.
- Stays abreast of industry technical and business trends through participation in professional associations, practice communities & individual learning. network with industry contacts to gain competitive insights and best practices.
- Resolves issues regarding processes that are raised from all sources/stakeholders, including design effectiveness challenges from testing and audit teams.
