The Opportunity
The Technical Officer/ Senior Technical Officer contributes to the output of the School of Electrical Engineering & Telecommunications through the development, maintenance and efficient day-to-day management of teaching and research equipment, infrastructure and services in the Electrical Engineering Laboratories. The Technical Officer/Senior Technical Officer will identify research and teaching requirements, facilitate commissioning and maintaining of specialised equipment, and manage user access and training across these two areas, with a particular focus on the photonics laboratories.

With a strong focus on Workplace Health and Safety, the Technical Officer/ Senior Technical Officer has an active role in compliance and WHS requirements, initiating and managing WHS activities and developing and implementing policies and procedures in collaboration with the HSE Advisor, specifically with respect to dangerous goods and hazardous substances.

The Technical Officer/ Senior Technical Officer leads the maintenance of high standards of work practice and drives a culture of continuous improvement in the operation of the laboratories.

The role of Technical Officer/ Senior Technical Officer reports to the Senior Laboratory Manager and has no direct reports.

  • Salary, Level 6/7: $91472-$108588 per annum (+ 17% superannuation & leave loading)
  • Full-time, continuing role
  • Location: Kensington Campus – Sydney, Australia

Skills and Experience
Level 6

  • Bachelor of Engineering degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
  • Demonstrated experience working with and knowledge of optics, lasers, optical fibres and associated photonic components
  • Demonstrated undertaking of professional development to keep abreast of new techniques in photonics, electronics and electrical engineering
  • Experience with the organisation of repairs and servicing of equipment.
  • Experience with active participation in the further development of laboratories.
  • Experience with safe practices for handling and storing hazardous substances and dangerous goods
  • A demonstrated enthusiasm for sharing and acquiring knowledge
  •  Good oral and written communication skills
  • The ability to exercise a high level of autonomy and also work productively within a team environment
  • The ability to relate to people from various backgrounds and levels of authority
  • Knowledge of OHS responsibilities and proven experience developing and implementing safety systems in a laboratory context.

Additional Essential Criteria at level 7 (in addition to the above)

  • Previous experience managing laboratories within a research context
  • Expertise with optics, lasers, optical fibres and associated photonic components
  • Experience with photonic and electronic design activities
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training
