Here at Beanfield, we build, own, and operate the largest independent fibre-optic network in Toronto and Montreal. The layout of our ever-expanding network requires meticulous care from a handful of dedicated teams. Our Fibre Optic Design team (or GIS team) is an integral part of that process and the team is growing!
Reporting to the Network & Fibre Design Manager, the Specialist will be responsible for the delivery of projects which include core and aggregated fibre network architecture, fibre distribution network capacity review expansion and capacity overbuild. This position will be responsible for solutioning On-net capacity constraints for aggregated systems, circuit migration and design of near-net solutions. This key position will work closely with Access Network Designers and Network Planning to ensure all project requirements are met while ensuring digital records match field conditions.
Responsibilities
- Accountable for the delivery of optical designs considering optical link reach, fibre design efficiency, network reliability, redundancy, and scalability.
- Provide technical support to Sr. Designers / Network Specialists related to fibre optic route selection, ensuring implementation cost-effectiveness and enhanced performance of the existing and expanding fibre network.
- Plan end-to-end fibre solution and/or provide instructions to Implementation staff and engineering contractors for the successful delivery of the plan.
- Assists with design standards and guidelines updates on new optical distribution networks (OSP and ISP).
- Review business requirements and engineering plan to engineer and deliver accurate and reliable fibre solutions.
- Responsible for the delivery of optical solutions in a dynamic environment with varying degrees of complexity, and time frames.
- Accurately document fibre details on exiting fibre assets and take all necessary steps to ensure the data integrity of the fibre network is maintained.
- Responsible for maintaining data integrity of all databases through timely review, completion, and entry of As-build records into Patch Manager and ISP repository archives.
- Complete projects in accordance with engineering specifications, and planning requirements and delivered them on time.
- Produce Splice diagrams, Review and update As-built information in Patch Manager, keep track of fibre and port availability in the Network, and maximize the use of fibre architecture with every design.
- Assist other departments to resolve any escalations.
- Provide pre and post Sales Engineer Dept. support for the optical solutions including for RFP’s and customers designs, & technical questions.
- Coach other team members and deliver ongoing technical assistance and training.
- Provide analysis of performance against standards and industry benchmarks.
- Accountable for documentation of work
- Accountable for the maintenance and upkeep and data integrity of the asset associated with the fibre network.
- Provide support for the operation, maintenance, and restoration of the fibre network.
- Interpret OTDR/CD/PMD traces, loss measurements and other fibre characterization specifications for circuit acceptance.
- This role deals with complex optical designs and supports the team with On-net connectivity solutions as required (during peak periods of volume).

Skills & Qualifications
- High school diploma with a post-secondary degree or diploma in Networking, Engineering, Design, Computer Science and/ or related programs.
- 1-2 years experience as a Fibre Allocator or Jr. Designer is considered an asset.
- Bilingual preferred but not required.
- Experience with Fibre Optic Networks in a Wireline Telecommunications environment.
- Good working knowledge of all Microsoft applications, AutoCAD, Patch Manager.
- Experience in managing multiple, simultaneous, high-volume projects.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work well independently and on a team.
- Detail-oriented with an aptitude for tracking progress across many projects.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, strong organizational, written, verbal and time management skills.
- Knowledge of technology, standards and specifications related to transmission systems, switching, digital loop carrier and related telecommunications systems
- Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
- Fibre Optic principles, both theory and practical.
- Fibre optic design and architecture.

- Knowledge of VOIP, Internet and IPTV.
