At Sentaca, our Software Development Managers play a key role in the ongoing leadership, development and engagement of our teams as well as managing our projects and key customer relationships, which are all critically important for Sentaca’s continued growth and success. As a Software Development Manager at Sentaca, you’ll manage a team of software developers (20-25) who will report directly to you.
The Software Development Manager will also work collaboratively with customers, sales, and other internal departments to provide leadership, strategic thinking, insights and clear direction on current and future projects. The ideal candidate will have a strong hands-on development background and proven progressive experience managing the development of complex applications.
Team Management & Engagement
- Performing 1:1’s on a regular basis with team members, using Lattice software to track action items and content of the check-ins;
- Providing team members with advice and mentorship on best practices and processes;
- Developing goals & training, career development plans during 1:1’s;
- Engaging with new team members during orientation and ensuring their integration into the team and within Sentaca;
- On-boarding new team members with their project team, with the customer, and any other appropriate individuals/teams;
- Performance Management (annual performance reviews);
- Working with our VP of Software Solutions to complete annual compensation reviews;
- Managing Performance Improvement Process (PIP) as required with the assistance of the People & Culture team;
- Assisting the Talent Acquisition team by participating in the job design and interview process in the final round panel with the People & Culture team representative when required;
- Assisting the Talent Acquisition team by providing feedback and advice on screening questions and tests based on role requirements;
- Attending a regular meeting with the VP of Software Solutions to provide feedback, updates and check-in regarding your team’s status.
- Working closely alongside other Software Development Managers to identify short and long-term team objectives, with a focus on quality and iterative improvement.
Technical Leadership
- You can expect to have direct and ongoing input into the technical roadmap of our solutions and software strategy in conjunction with the VP of Software Solutions, architects and our engineering team, as appropriate;
- Identify and plan the adoption of new technologies as well as regularly reviewing current practices with guidance of the VP of Software Solutions;
- Assist team with technical issues as appropriate (escalating if necessary to the appropriate team members);
- Defining, establishing and improving our software development processes and best practices;
- Support strategic initiatives of the CTO Office on an ongoing basis, providing feedback, suggestions and critical inputs related to initiatives of strategic importance to the company. This may involve content creation, customer and industry engagement (e.g. trade shows etc) in support of these initiatives.
Project Management
- Regular attendance at important Agile ceremonies;
- Ensure that all projects in progress are on-track;
- Providing guidance to the team to ensure project governance standards is being followed;
- Responsible for planning, assigning and moving appropriate resources across projects, as appropriate;
- Creating project timelines in coordination with our Scrum Masters.
Customer Relations & Management
- Gather requirements for new initiatives and projects from our clients, under direction of VP of Software Solutions;
- Answering customer inquiries;
- Creating and overseeing estimates for project work.
Must Have Skills/Experience
- Excellent communication skills;
- Experience in software development/design/architecture and SDLC (minimum 5 years);
- Experience in software development management (minimum 3 years);
- Experience with managing team with more than ten (10) team members;
- Experience working directly with external customers;
- Experience working in Agile environment;
- Knowledge of new technologies (one of: cloud native, video streaming, embedded software)
- Demonstrated critical thinking and decision making;
- You must have expert knowledge of software solution creation, an awareness of automation topics, and have strong communication, time management, and prioritization skills.
Nice to Have Skills/Experience
- Experience in the telecommunications industry;
- Experience working with a technical consulting team;
- Experience as a software architecture experience.
