Summary:
The Sr. Network Engineer II is responsible for all network planning and engineering functions related to Shentel’s network infrastructure. Primary responsibilities include performing capacity planning, new technology evaluation, and project management of all major system upgrades and extension projects. Additionally, the Sr. Network Engineer II will generate detailed project plans and reports for all major Shentel cable and fiber initiative and proactively identify tactical and long-range performance or capacity improvements.

Qualification Requirements:
a. Education: BS degree in a relevant engineering or technology field is required. Other candidates with a strong technical background and substantial industry or military experience will be considered.

b. Experience Level:
i. 10 or more years of experience in the telecommunications industry is required

ii. 7 or more years of headend design, outside plant design, Civil Engineering, or fiber optic network design

c. Special Requirements:
i. CCNA, CCNP, or similar certifications preferred, but not required

ii. Optical and IP network design with hands-on experience designing and deploying networks in a service provider or large enterprise environment

iii. Strong project management experience

d. Skill Requirements:
i. Detail oriented and strong organizational skills

ii. Demonstrated strong troubleshooting and problem solving skills

iii. Excellent written and verbal communication skills

iv. Ability to multitask and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

v. Comfortable working with legal agreements and binding documents

vi. Comfortable working with landowners, property owners, and or municipalities for site and property acquisition

Knowledge of:
a. Fiber Networks (outside plant, network equipment, CPE)

b. Access networks (FTTH, DSL, DOCSIS, Metro Ethernet)

c. Transport technologies (Ethernet, optical networking, IP routing/networking)

d. Routing & Switching (MPLS, VPN’s, layer 2/3 QOS, VLAN, ISIS, BGP, and HSRP)

e. Voice network technologies and protocols (traditional telephone and VoIP)

f. Head End network technologies (HE optics, nodes, actives, passives, STB’s, digital headend equipment, etc.)

g. High Level Knowledge of Planning and Zoning processes

H. High level knowledge of Land Disturbance, Building, and Electrical Permitting processes.
