Position Overview

The Senior Telecom Engineer will be the E&I department’s subject matter expert and consultant for telecom, site security, radio, PAGA scope across all active projects and pursuits. Location

This position is based out of our Energy Corridor Office in Houston, TX.


Responsibilities

  • Telecommunications SME for the E&I Engineering Department in Kiewit’s Oil, Gas, & Chemical District
  • Stays up to date with latest telecom and site security and technologies
  • Manages and coordinates telecom and site security vendor sub-contract packages
  • Performs occasional site visits as a technical resource for telecom and site security installation and commissioning as needed
  • Interprets and apply codes and standards for telecom solutions across all district projects
  • Supports estimating in identifying and evaluating telecom and site security scopes of work for potential projects
  • Identifies alternate solutions that relates to quality and best cost options.
  • Interacts effectively with other groups to find best solutions to complex issues.
  • Provides resolutions for technically complex issues.
  • Considers multiple solutions and makes good decisions based on good data analysis.
  • Manages several different project assignments simultaneously.
  • Uses resources to identify new solutions and finds best cost solutions.
  • Serves as resource to less experienced engineers.
  • Reviews application of standards for correct interpretation.
  • Produces design changes as needed to stay within budget and schedule.
  • Plans work independently with no supervision and consults others on technical details of their work.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Telecommunications Engineering, or related required.
  • 10–20 year minimum relevant experience, refining and petrochemical industry experience is a bonus.
  • Acts independently to determine methods and processes for projects
  • Trains and mentors young engineers in a variety of disciplines to understand aspects of telecommunications as needed.
  • Work with project team and coordinates integrated activities
  • between other disciplines and departments
  • Manage meetings with Team, vendors, Clients and Project management as well as other disciplines for project updates and discussions
  • Supports project teams and departments in a positive and productive manner. Works well with other to accomplish common goals and objectives.
  • Serves as technical resource to engineers, designers, and other disciplines regarding telecommunications aspects for the project
  • Practice improvement and cost cutting initiatives when planning and designing telecommunications systems
  • Occasional field visit to Project sites.
  • Proficient with Telecommunications Standards, Codes and Regulation such as Bicsi, IEC, IEEE, TIA /ETA, ITU, ANSI/TIA, and NFPA regulatory and code requirements to site facilities
  • Experienced with vendor management and of telecommunications packages
  • Knowledge of managing a project in the various stages of Engineer Design pertaining to the OGC Industry
  • Capable of producing technical Specifications, Basis of Design and Telecommunications Philosophies
  • Effective utilize of CAD software applications i.e., AutoCAD, Micro-station, SP3D, Smart-plant and Visio
  • Experience with the design and integration of Telecommunications systems and the associated project management for those systems
  • The ability to communicate effectively while working with internal and external customers.
  • Manage multiple communications projects while also fielding requests and support from various sources.
  • Work with minimum supervision and be self-motivated is required.
  • Act as the subject matter expertise pertaining to Plant cabling including Fiber Optic, Copper and Ethernet cabling and its associated infrastructure.
  • Prepare telecom design calculations
Must be familiar with the following Telecommunications Systems:

  • Wireless – WLAN technology used within Industrial and OGC plant applications
  • Voice Systems – Voice over IP phone Systems
  • Hot Line – Phone Systems
  • Management of Carrier activities to provide Client support
  • Access Control Systems – For indoor and outdoor applications
  • Satellite, Microwave, LTE, and Cellular Systems – Primary or Backup system for remote project communication
