GCI’s Technician II, Construction & Implementation will be working closely with engineering and project management offices to develop, construct, and deliver maintaining system wide oversight and network integrity within all plant systems and architecture, network, and business facilities, the turn up of all related communications equipment across Alaska and occasionally in the lower 48.
This Technician role is eligible for a $1,500 Hiring Bonus for new hires!
The successful candidate will receive: $750 paid in your first paycheck $750 paid 6 months after hire with continued employment.
*This position can be assigned to any or all areas needed to support network repairs including outside plant, construction, business, and network facilities
Essential Duties:
- Understanding of electronics and telephony equipment, field-based construction and implementation with technical applications supporting junior and senior technicians, engineers, project management to deploy network infrastructure and architecture including outside/inside plant applications.
- Construction, design, and implementation of network facilities and delivery architecture in accordance with industry standards, best practices to maintain network integrity.
- Industry standard implementation and installation, modification, testing, and turn-up procedures of video, voice, and data circuits and equipment, to include terrestrial, satellite, microwave, optical, hybrid fiber coax, and ethernet.
- Support and install equipment racks, cabinets for central, remote, and field offices to include rack support pedestals, cable trays, bracing, optical enclosures and all relevant cabling infrastructure etc.
- Analytical skills and demonstrated ability to accurately read, interpret/evaluate, apply/implement, update information from system maps, equipment readings, test parameters, construction and design work orders, associated engineering drawings and follow-up documentation.
- Coordination and oversight of contract resources, i.e., installers, technicians, electricians, HVAC contractors etc.
Collaboration, modifications in coordination with Construction and Implementation Technicians III, Sr. and assigned GCI engineering staff or leadership across all departments
Additional Job Requirements : This is intermediate level position that will require a demonstrated understanding of telecommunications installation, modification and test procedures, the ability to support senior technicians and mentor junior technicians. Ability to collaboratively execute network construction and maintenance, telecommunications equipment installation, test, and turn up, under moderate supervision with work reviewed by senior staff.
Essential Duties for this position :
Network & Equipment Adds, Moves, and Changes
- Organizes daily workload and priorities while receiving general instructions on routine work and detailed instructions of new assignments.
- Strong knowledge of OSP network construction, implementation, routine preventative or corrective maintenance, testing or repairs, construction management of facilities, optical, and electronic equipment providing video, voice, and data services to maintain network integrity.
- Installation and removal of service and non-service affecting equipment and new network infrastructure and devices with senior technician support of service affecting equipment and network infrastructure, test and turn-up across Anchorage, remote Alaska with occasional travel to the lower 48 states.
- Advanced implementation and installation of central office equipment racks and cabinets, rack support pedestals, cable trays, bracing, main distribution frames and fuse and power distribution panels.
- Installs, identifies and terminates under light supervision various types of cabling and wiring including coax, ethernet, optical, waveguide, data and power cables
- Advanced understanding and implementation of antennas, antenna foundations, towers, waveguide, ice bridges, grounding system, fences, and HVAC units.
- Tests and turn-up of all equipment installed to industry specifications and best practices; troubleshooting technical issues as needed. Equipment Installation, test and turn-up in Anchorage, remote Alaska with occasional travel to the lower 48.
Documentation/Communication
- Communicates with TAC or Dispatch to update and complete repair or trouble tickets.
- Assists with new installations and trouble tickets in a timely manner.
- Verify accuracy of written work order and ensures all documentation is updated in a timely manner.
- Escalates more complex issues as needed to the appropriate department, or management team.
Field Design and Collaboration
- Work with senior technicians and respond to outages or other duties as required and guides and trains less experienced technicians.
- Design test fixtures, analyze test results, and document tests performed on components.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :
- Demonstration of strong interpersonal, verbal, computer, and written skills to include company programs, processes, and procedures.
- Demonstrated understanding of electronics and telephony equipment, ability to accurately interpret and apply GR.1275, NEC, NESC, OSHA, FCC, industry standard and municipal practices, company rules and regulations, ability to work with and aid higher-level technicians.
- Demonstrated ability to install, test, modify, and repair a wide range of central office, remote office and field office support equipment, including cabling, power distribution and grounding, framework, air handling controls, and alarm reporting systems with adept knowledge of relevant test equipment, procedures, troubleshooting of circuits and equipment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of proper installation practices of central office racking and framing equipment, operation, testing, and troubleshooting of a wide range of telecommunications equipment including but not limited to routers, hubs, satellite modems and antenna systems, protection switches and amplifiers, VSAT stations, microwave radio systems, switches, M&C Equipment, DLC systems, channel banks, structured cabling systems, DACS systems, fiber-optic multiplexers, high-speed data circuits and equipment, and distributed data networks.
- Intermediate level of KU, KA, C Band dishes and infrastructure, cellular, microwave, equipment towers and shelters.
- Intermediate level understanding of basic AC and DC power systems, grounding in a central office and remote office environment, -48-volt, direct current power systems with an understanding of general safety regulations.
- Possess a comprehensive knowledge of fiber-optic, coax and network cabling, and telecommunications and electronic installation procedures in all environments .
Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum six (6) years’ experience with a telecommunications or related field background including four (4) years of complex related experience.
- High School diploma or equivalent required.
- Associates Degree in electronics, telecommunications trade school or equivalent training preferred .
- Or a combination of relevant work experience and/or education sufficient to perform the duties of the job substitute to meet the total years required on a year-for-year basis. For promotion/progression from Technician, I to Technician II, NCTI “Service Technician” certification or approved equivalent required. New hires will be required to enroll within 90 days and complete the course within 6 months of hire.
Certifications: Industry specific certifications are highly valued. Upon hire be required to complete. Company or other applicable training and certifications including Pole/Tower Climbing, AK DOT Bucket Truck and AK DOT approved Flagger Certification. Additional certifications or successful course completion be required within a defined period after position acceptance.

Physical Requirements : High degree of balance, coordination and strength needed routinely in climbing poles, towers, ladders, etc. and avoiding obstacles. Daily walking, crawling, bending, stooping, and kneeling on varied surfaces such as roofs and in trenches often hampered by weather elements. Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling to maneuver equipment/supplies of up to 70-pound loads occasionally, less weight more regularly. High degree of hand dexterity and eye/hand coordination to operate hand tools and to connect, separate, and twist multiple smaller items daily. Clarity of vision at every distance with good depth perception and ability to clearly distinguish colors routinely for driving and performing assigned tasks. Good hearing, capable of distinction between equipment signals and the human voice often amidst background noises, such as wind, rain and traffic.
Working Conditions : Subject to adverse weather and driving conditions. Work involves heights up to 40 feet on poles, ladders, buckets, or towers up to 250’. Work performed below overhead construction and in trenches to 10 feet in depth. Tasks performed around high-power electrical conductors and gas lines. Work areas can be cramped, dark, dusty, damp, wet, stuffy, sticky, smelly, hot and/or cold. encounter unrestrained animals/pets.
Must be able and willing to work flexible hours including, but not limited to, overtime, on-call, and/or additional time on weekends, holidays, evenings, before or after normal shift hours. Travel be required to assist other systems personnel.
- All Technicians and above must be able to cope with a remote arctic environment.
- Drug Testing: Participation in a DOT or non-DOT drug and alcohol testing program be required to satisfy conditions of a contract or proposed contract with a business partner or client. This includes pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return to duty, and follow-up testing.
- Fitness For: Duty: Ability to pass a pre-employment or return to work physical and fitness for duty examination be required to satisfy conditions of a contract or proposed contract with a business partner or client.
The company and its subsidiaries operate in a 24/7 environment providing critical services to Alaskans and need to respond to public health and safety matters or other business emergencies. Due to business needs employees be contacted outside of the core business hours to respond to the immediate emergency. You will be requested to provide an emergency after hours contact numbers.
Driving Requirements (required) : Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, and a satisfactory driving record. Compliance with company driver safety program required.
