Complete specific training and adhere to all AEP safety requirements for working on electrical transmission and distribution facilities, fully aware of and compliant to required personal protective equipment and minimum approach distances (MAD) at all times.
Work to gain advanced to expert knowledge and understanding of various Telecommunications skills, technologies, business processes and business partner requirements. Use standard procedures to analyze and solve technical or system problems. Provide cross training to others when required or as needed.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS are listed below:
General:
- Perform advanced level installation, maintenance and repair of various Telecommunications related equipment.
- Perform advanced level troubleshooting and system testing, and produce required documentation.
- Assist or lead training of other employees in lower job grades, teaching the proper safety techniques and job skills.
- Utilize telecommunications knowledge gained to assist others in a technical discipline.
- Focus on learning and advancing present levels of competency in required technical disciplines.
- Participate in and provide cross training, focusing primarily on fiber optic cable and broadband equipment technologies, AC/DC power systems, and telecom transport systems.
- Understand Telecommunications business unit and business partner requirements.
- Perform required entries into database and record keeping systems for work and asset tracking.
Physical Job Functions:
- Learn and demonstrate the broadband-related line mechanic physical tasks required of an AEP Line Mechanic-B, as trained and tested by the AEP T&D Line School.
- Drive and operate standard Telecom technician trucks and Telecom broadband service bucket (squirt boom) trucks and associated auxiliary equipment to support broadband equipment and terminals, fiber optic cable, and future technologies that may utilize T&D or Telecom infrastructure and facilities.
- Climb or use ladders when necessary, to access and work on overhead broadband equipment and terminals, fiber optic cable, and future technologies that may utilize T&D or Telecom infrastructure and facilities.
- All job duties apply to overhead and underground equipment and facilities where fiber optic cable and broadband facilities are located and must be supported by Telecom.
Technical Job Functions required for Technician-A in one or more of the following areas:
- Demonstrate advanced to expert level of understanding and ability to perform fiber optic cable installation, maintenance, repair, removal, and inspection; demonstrate fiber splicing, testing and connecting methods and requirements.
- Exhibit advanced to expert level of understanding of AC/DC power systems, electrical and broadband infrastructure.

Minimum Requirements
Education: High School Diploma or GED with at least 5 years of related broadband support or line mechanic training and experience.
Associate Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology or Technical Degree or Certificate in related field are preferred and beneficial for future opportunities in the Technology organization.
Experience: Minimum of 2 years work experience as Telecom Broadband Technician-B or the equivalent experience as determined by the Company.
Licenses/Certification(s): Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license.

General Requirements of this Position:

A strong ability and desire to perform broadband support and associated line work safely are necessary. Also, a strong electronics / telecommunications aptitude is desired.

Maintain a valid driver license at all times. Driving of company vehicles is required including city, highway, and off-road travel as necessary.

Overnight travel and daily travel for work as required.

Ability to work overtime as assigned;
Telecommunications Broadband Physical Proficiency are similar safety training and demonstration requirements as the AEP Line Mechanic-B. While the Telecom Broadband Technician-A will perform most work on non-electrical conductors and systems outside Minimum Approach Distance (MAD), the employee is expected to learn and demonstrate Line Mechanic-B skills with a full understanding of the electrical system with primary emphasis on safety. Such training and skills may include but are not limited to:

Perform all types of work involved with the installation, rearrangement, maintenance, operation, removal and inspection of electrical transmission and distribution facilities as required for broadband and related telecommunications work. All items apply to overhead and underground, as applicable. Employee may perform miscellaneous, related, and incidental work in addition to core broadband support as assigned by the manager. The Telecom Broadband Technician-A builds upon the skills, abilities and knowledge learned as a Telecom Broadband Technician-B (or equivalent).

Train and demonstrate how to assemble, install, maintain, remove and inspect conductors, fixtures and other associated equipment on overhead and underground facilities as needed for broadband support.

Locate and follow standard processes to correct faults and hazardous conditions on lines and/or telecommunications broadband or other equipment.

Perform similar or less skilled work as needed.

Prepare, conduct and facilitate safety meetings.

Direct the work of employees assigned to assist.
Additional Requirements:

Shall have performed the duties of and have all the qualifications of Telecom Broadband Technician-B or the equivalent and shall qualify through demonstration, examination and/or performance appraisal as determined by the Company.

Must have the ability and desire to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to perform the duties and/or responsibilities of the key job (Telecom Broadband Technician-A) in this family and be qualified through demonstration, examination and/or performance appraisal as determined by the Company.

Must acquire within such time frame as determined by the Company, the qualifications necessary to perform the duties of the next higher classification in the line of progression, or vacate the current job classification.

Successful completion of the Construction and Skilled Trades (CAST) selection test is required for this position.
Physical Demands:
Heavy physical demands include operating broadband support bucket truck, climbing poles, using ladders, and working on equipment and cables above shoulder height, and carrying/lifting heavy test equipment, tools, terminals and cables.
