Telecom Drill Locator (Ditch Witch / Vermeer)

The locator is responsible for gathering and interpreting the information and then gives the drill operator directions on which way to steer the drill bit.

Responsibilities

  • Perform locating services of the drill head for directional drilling operations
  • Locator must understand and have the ability to read utility markings and provide guidance direction to the drill operator, adhering to the running lines and avoiding existing utilities.
  • Capabilities to occasionally operate equipment to excavate, place duct, pull cable, and direct bury main-line and drops preferred
  • Must have good communication skills and a positive attitude
  • The ability to work safely, with or without supervision
  • Ability to take direction from crew Foreman and work well with others
  • Must have a high safety awareness to help keep the job site and co-workers safe

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Strong work ethic
  • Must have experience locating for horizontal directional drill operations
  • Must be able to understand how to read utility markings
  • Valid US Driver’s License
  • Able to safely work in a fast-paced environment
  • Must have the ability to work safely, with or without supervision

Preferred Qualifications

  • OSHA 10
  • 2+ years’ experience as a locator for horizontal directional drill operations

Physical Demands and Work Environment

This job operates in a field environment. This role routinely requires extended periods of bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting, lifting in awkward positions, standing, and twisting. Also, working in inclement weather conditions, such as extreme heat, extreme cold, rain, ice, snow, and wind.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. This position is physically active, with lifting required. Must be able to bend and lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; and fumes or airborne particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
