JOB SUMMARY :

This position is responsible for regional, plus system level, design and support of Southern Company’s optical telecommunications systems and infrastructure. The position will have a heavy emphasis on design and support of the company’s outside plant fiber network and DWDM systems. Additionally, the position will provide 3 rd level support for other optical telecommunications system, such as our SEL ICON, and Nokia SARs. This position is expected to design, manage projects, assignments, maintenance, and requests with minimal oversight and to effectively interface with multiple cross-functional parties on a frequent basis. i.e.: IOC, Telecom Aggregate Services, Telecom Edge Services, Field Operations, as well as Power Delivery and external parties (vendors and partners).

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES :

Primary responsibilities include OSP fiber design and implementation, DWDM design and implementation, 3rd level optical telecommunications problem resolution, field level project management / implementation oversight, project engineering support, field level or formal training delivery, and quality assurance as required to support project and operational goals of the company’s telecommunications transport network.

JOB REQUIREMENTS: (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills )

Education / Experience:

  • Four-year degree required

  • Four-year degree in an engineering discipline preferred

  • 2 years experience in a similar telecommunications role minimum

  • Proven track record in telecommunications design, project implementation and maintenance expected

General Competencies:

  • General knowledge of Southern Company core business

  • General knowledge of information technologies (those currently used within the system and new technologies)

  • General knowledge of IT infrastructure components

  • Knowledge of state-of-the-art telecommunications equipment, facilities, troubleshooting techniques and concepts

  • Ability to effectively organize tasks, manage multiple priorities/details, meet schedules, and deliver on customer commitments

  • Ability to negotiate with and influence others – internally as well as vendors

  • Ability to build relationships and work in a TEAM atmosphere

  • Ability to provide and accept feedback

Technical / Leadership skills:

  • Understand/achieve business, TO, and departmental goals, strategies, and plans.

  • Ensure full compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley rules and regulations.

  • In-depth knowledge of OSP fiber and DWDM preferred; alternatively, OSP Fiber or DWDM, plus one or more of the following telecommunications transport technologies: Nokia SARs or other similar Data Networking routers, SEL ICONs, other legacy telecom equipment.

  • Solid technical understanding of telecom networks, data networks, voice networks, and other major applications that use Southern Company’s transport network.

  • Ability to analyze information from multiple sources for complex problem resolution.

  • Ability to lead a team, coordinating various workgroups to drive complex problem resolution in a timely and efficient manner.

  • Ability to design / engineer network modifications / additions

  • Ability to organize tasks and coordinate various employees, vendor / contractors, and customers / partners to meet project goals

  • Ability to work independently, prioritizing major tasks by overall impact to the company

  • Ability to arrive at cost effective solutions in support of outages and projects

  • Ability to communicate and work with all levels of management, vendors, and other internal and external groups and customers

  • Ability to effectively lead meetings, train personnel, and make presentations

  • Ability to effectively utilize standard Company computing applications (i.e. Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.)

  • Ability to appropriately utilize documentation tools as required by specific job (CAD, TBMS, Visio, etc.)

The Telecom Engineer job requires the ability to drive long distances, travel overnight, be subject to 24×7 call out, work shifts greater than 8 hrs, lift / carry items up to approx. 50 lbs, climb stairs / ladders, and work in areas requiring specific safety measures such as radio transmission sites, fiber optic transmission sites, power plants, substations, transmission right – of- ways, as well as various remote locations.
