Posting Summary Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Telecommunications Analyst for the Office of Information Technology. This position provides engineering and design expertise for the implementation and maintenance of the university’s fiber optic cable infrastructure, including aerial and underground leased route acquisition, and maintenance of licensed attachments in the public right-of-way.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Supports the data (RUNet) and voice (VoIP) networks throughout the university’s campuses in Newark, New Brunswick, and Camden.
  • Designs, configures, installs, manages, and troubleshoots fiber optic cabling and associated hardware.
  • Maintains the existing fiber optic cable plant including design drawings, spreadsheets, cable management (RCMS) and right-of-way records for all new and existing fiber optic installations.
  • Manages relocations of existing telecommunications infrastructure for new building construction and renovations.
  • Supervises staff tasked with maintaining the university’s fiber optic cable plant and providing field supervision of contractors working on construction projects.

Work Arrangement Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement.
The flexible work arrangements outlined in Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 are part of a pilot program that is effective September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2024. Therefore, there is no guarantee that this flexible work arrangement will continue beyond that date. Flexible work arrangements are not permanent, are subject to change or cancellation and contingent on the employee receiving approval in the FlexWork@RU Application System. Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • A minimum of five years of relevant professional experience.
Certifications/Licenses
  • Use of personal vehicle in order to travel for business demands; a valid driver’s license would be required for this position. 
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Excellent communication skills and computer literacy.
  • Ability to correctly identify and diagnose complex network problems.
  • Must be able to handle multiple, shifting priorities.
  • Must be able to handle a large volume of technical problem resolution.
  • Must be able to work work well with senior staff in a team oriented, and cooperative environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Fiber Optic Certifications; familiarity with NFPA fire and electrical codes.
Equipment Utilized
  • OTDR and power meters.
  • Computer skills which include the use of software such as AutoCAD, Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat and cable management software.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Must possess a valid NJ driver’s license and must take the Rutgers Defensive driving class. Must be able to lift 60lbs and work on a ladder.
