Information Technology Services Division (ITSD) supports the Department by acquiring, distributing, installing and maintaining Local Area Networks, personal computers, mainframe computers, software, and data communications networks. ITSD also plans and coordinates the implementation of advanced technology.

ITSD is need of a Telecommunications Associate (Data), Level IV, who responsibilities will include:
1 – Installation and testing of copper and fiber cables for the Department’s network hardware needs
2 – Troubleshooting, repairing and modifying network connectivity

3 – Ability to document network connectivity requirements
4 Provide technical support in the relocation of network hardware and maintaining a telecommunications and related computer inventory
5 – Verifies service by testing circuits, equipment, and alarms; and identifying, correcting, or escalating problems
6 – Document networks by labeling and routing equipment, cables and recording configuration and cabling diagrams and specifications
7 – Maintains network by troubleshooting and repairing outages, testing network connectivity procedures, and updating documentation
8 – Plans network installations, customer orders, plans, manuals, and technical specifications; ordering and gathering equipment, supplies, materials, and tools; assessing installation site; and preparing an installation diagram
9 – Establishes voice and data networks by running, pulling, terminating, and splicing cables; installing telecommunications equipment, routers, switches, multiplexors, cable trays, and alarm and fire-suppression systems; building ironwork and ladder racks; establishing n connections; programming features; establishing connections and integrations; following industry standards; and coordinating with contractors
10 – Prepare engineering reports and surveys; design; write specifications and make engineering recommendations on various radio and wire communications system

Minimum Qual Requirements

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college including or supplemented by 24 semester credits in data telecommunications/ networking or in a pertinent scientific, technical, electronic or related area and one year of satisfactory full-time experience in the performance of analytical, planning, operational, technical, and/or administrative duties in a data telecommunications or closely-related electronics planning, electronics management, and/or electronics service environment; or

2. An associate degree from an accredited college including or supplemented by 12 semester credits in data telecommunications/ networking or in a pertinent scientific, technical, electronic or related area and two years of experience as described in “1” above; or

3. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and three years of experience as described in “1” above; or

4. A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience equivalent to “1”, “2” or “3” above. A college education may be substituted for experience on the basis of six months of experience as described in “1” above for each 30 semester credits of undergraduate college education including or supplemented by 6 semester credits in data telecommunications/networking or in a pertinent scientific, technical, electronic or related area for a maximum of two years. However, all candidates must have at least a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and at least one year of the experience as described in “1” above.

Special Note – Additional Requirements for Assignment Level IV

To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level IV individuals must have, after meeting the minimum requirements, at least two additional years of full-time experience as follows: 1) As a Telecommunications Associate (Data)-Assignment Levels I, II, and III working for the City of New York; or

2) Performing analytical, planning, operational, technical, and/or administrative duties in a data telecommunications, electronics planning, electronics management, and/or electronics service environment, one year of which must have been specialized work in a consultative or supervisory capacity.

Preferred Skills

Candidates must be experienced in cabling and infrastructure design including cabling distribution pathways and spaces, horizontal cabling systems, operation of data analyzers, cable scanners, PCs, punch down tools, line toners/receivers, telecommunications and equipment rooms, telecommunications service entrance and termination, aerial plant, underground, and buried cable, grounding, bonding, and electrical protection, electromagnetic compatibility, firestopping, principles of transmission, optical fiber, NTS (LAN), wireless, T1/T3 Sonet and DWDM connectivity.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program The PSLF Program forgives the remaining balance on your Direct Loan after you have made 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan while working full time for a qualifying employer, such as a U.S. federal, state, local, or tribal government or not-for-profit organization. You may be able to consolidate a Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) and Federal Perkins Loan into a Direct Loan to qualify for PSLF.

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
