Spring Co-op opportunity: Program Location is either Cincinnati, OH or Plainfield, IN

The Telecommunications Co-op is Duke Energy’s technical and professional development position for currently enrolled college students seeking to increase their knowledge and skills in the IT and Telecom fields. The Co-op will participate on a variety of compelling business and technical ventures while gaining invaluable on-the-job experience while gaining familiarity with the organization and the company’s business operations, by networking with more senior level employees, as well as honing their own skills for future practical application.

The successful candidate for this position will work with experienced Data Network Engineers in developing, maintaining, and testing of routine work procedures and define standard designs, installation, support, and upgrade methodologies for our Data network. Responsibilities may include evaluation, design, installation, integration testing, upgrading components, operational support, and performance monitoring of the data network environment

Responsibilities:

  • Design of Cisco networks. Understanding of Layer 2 and Layer 3 switching. Understanding of Spanning tree protocols. Understand subnetting. Understanding of the layers of the OSI model. Understanding TCP and UDP. Understanding of Access control lists. Understanding of how and when to use certain statements on Cisco routers and switches. Understanding of EIGRP, OSPF and BGP. Understanding of routing protocols, what types and when to use.
  • Completes routine projects with minimal oversight with increasing ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; increasingly competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.
  • Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures, proficient in technical and analytical competencies. 
  • Assists in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities under the guidance of higher-level employees.
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. 
  • Supports the company’s goals and represents the company positively and professionally.
  • Manages personal self-development and maintains current knowledge of the industry to leverage more effective or emerging technologies
  • Participate on and lead small-scale initiatives
  • Participate in process improvement
  • Grow technical expertise and knowledge

Basic Qualifications:

  • Cumulative GPA of at least 2.75
  • Currently enrolled and pursuing a Bachelor or Master degree in an IT or Engineering related major, such as; Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Management Information Systems, Mathematics, Software Information Systems, Information Technology, Information Science, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering, as a rising sophomore, junior or senior.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Practical experience in using Microsoft applications like Excel, Word, and Teams.
  • Ability to begin co-op full-time starting January 2024

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Previous job experience that demonstrates the maturity to work in a team setting and being able to work independently with limited management oversight. 
  • Professional and effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Exposure to or familiarity with computer networking and telecommunications
  • Two or fewer years of full time IT or Engineering work experience
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Ability to excel in a variety of roles
  • Self-driven, motivated, and proactive
  • Demonstrates troubleshooting & problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds. Demonstrated ability to build working relationships with different levels within the organization.
  • Ability to learn and apply defined telecom technologies to the business.
  • Effective inter-personal skills (listening, conflict management, approachability, negotiations).

Working Conditions:

  • Hybrid – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute of the work location.
  • Some opportunities require a valid driver’s license
  • Many of our opportunities require a 40-hour work week
  • Housing stipend available when applicable
