Telecommunications Design Engineer

As the Telecommunications Design Engineer, you  will provide project review and coordination of networking and telecommunications infrastructure for all renovation and new construction projects on Purdue’s campuses. This includes, telecom rooms, Inside Plant (ISP) fiber optic/copper cabling, and Outside Plant (OSP) fiber optic/copper cabling. Primary work location will be the West Lafayette campus, but some projects may encompass Purdue’s campuses in Hammond, Westville, and Fort Wayne. 

You will support projects from design inception to final construction; identify resources needed and assist to develop schedules to ensure timely completion of networking and ‎‎‎telecommunications projects.  You will attend project meetings and coordinate construction documents, procurement ‎‎procedures ‎and necessary communications for a successful installation.  In this position you will know and understand all of Purdue’s Telecommunications specifications and Guidelines and will help develop and enforce these standards.  You will perform site visits during and post construction as required to ensure that standards are being followed at all times and will work with installers to determine best practices if standard installation methods are not possible.

This position will design/build the next generation network infrastructure for a top tier research university.

This position will also assist the networking and telecommunications group in defining, developing and promoting plans for the ‎future of Campus and ‎‎State-wide infrastructure as well as ‎‎establishing University policies and procedures concerning infrastructure issues
 

This is a hybrid position where you will work part of your week on campus and the other part remotely.

What We’re Looking For:

Education and Experience
 

Must have:

• Bachelor’s degree in networking, project management, telecommunications, or electronics 
• Three (3) years of experience in telecommunications-related work
  • Preference given to work in cabling infrastructure design and installation of networking and/or telecommunications systems or infrastructure
• Experience with telecommunications installations and construction.  Including ISP/OSP copper and fiber optic cables. 
• Experience in Project Management
• Equivalent combination of work experience and education may be accepted
• Valid driver’s license required

 
Skills:

• Verifiable knowledge of Industry standards such as BICSI, EIA/TIA, FOA, etc
• Knowledge of Purdue University campus cabling infrastructure and standards 
• Excellent written and verbal communication and attention to detail
• Skills in time management and problem solving
• Ability to 
  • and interest in ongoing continuing education and training in products, materials, and methods
  • educate others, within and outside the team, on telecommunications and network topics 
  • read and understand construction documents
  • communicate ‎with varied construction disciplines
  • lift ladders and heavy objects such as manhole/handhole lids
  • work in confined areas as well as hot/cold worksites
  • work outside of normal business hours, evenings and weekends due to outages and other unplanned incidents
