The Opportunity:

UCF is seeking to hire two (2) Telecommunications Engineering Technician positions – Positions #P-34034 and #P-34038. Under general supervision, the Telecommunications (Telecom) Engineering Technician purchases, installs, and supports physical layer telecommunications systems. This position is responsible as the subject matter expert for all technical and operational items related to the university’s telecommunications physical layer infrastructure.  Sub groups within IMR include Construction, Architecture, Moves/adds/changes, Security and Emergency systems.  This position also assists the IMR Telecom Engineering Manager in all facets of Telecommunications projects.

Responsibilities:  

• Performs specific project management or works in conjunction with UCF IT Project management office to track project schedules, budgets, risks, resource requirements, customer interactions, etc.

• Provides guidance, direction, and industry knowledge to all IMR subgroup members (Projects, Security, MAC and Infrastructure Architecture) while working with other UCF IT Telecommunications groups (Network Service, Unified Communication, Radio / DAS and Warehouse).

• Designs, documents, estimates, configures and installs complex physical structured cabling topologies. Completes tasks on OSP fiber/Copper, Duct bank, networking/AV/Access control cabling.

• Provides the physical layer design, installation and troubleshooting for the University’s enterprise Telecommunications systems. Solves complex issues through physical and logical investigation.

• Responsible for ensuring all projects, tickets and tasks within that sub group are completed within budget, scope and time lines. Will be responsible for assigning tickets and various projects to IMR sub group members.

• Works within a Telecom Enterprise Management software application (Service Now and Pinnacle) to receive, document, respond and record various trouble tickets and service requests.

• Develops, implements, and maintains IMR’s Policies, Network Infrastructure Standards and Guidelines. Meets weekly with IMR Manager of Telecom Engineering to discuss in detail current and future projects, load capacity planning and material procurement.

• Follows Standard Operating Procedures as determined by the specific sub group within the department. This includes work-order/ticket flows, documentation, outage communication and customer interactions.

• Attends various seminars, training and conferences related to current or emerging technology. Specifically, BICSI/TIA/EIA industry standards that apply to all physical topologies within the university and its telecommunications infrastructure. Will be given opportunities to obtain certifications in specific concentrations. 

• Other duties as assigned, which may include temporary supervisory role for the subunit within the department.

Minimum Qualifications:  

High School Diploma or Equivalent and 2+ years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications: 

• 7 years of experience in telecommunications industry.

• Ability to lift 50 lbs.

• Ability to read construction documents.

• Problem solving skills of issues for all physical layer components and tools.

• Ability communicate effectively within Telecommunications subunits and cross functional groups.

• Strong organizational and documentation skills with careful attention to detail.

• Ability to handle various power hand tools.

• Ability to navigate through Microsoft Office applications.

Special Instructions to the Applicants: 

This position must be available 24/7 in case of an emergency and may be asked to work during emergency situations including early, late, weekend, holiday hours and/or university closures such as during a hurricane; since UCF IT Telecommunications is considered a “mission essential” component of UCF’s operational capability.  Additionally, a person in this position may be asked to work a flexible schedule that includes non-traditional hours to perform essential job functions that cannot be performed during “normal” business hours.
