Telecommunications & Fire Safety Technician

What You’ll Be Doing:

As the Telecommunications & Fire Safety Technician, you will inspect, repair, and maintain fire protection, emergency telephones, and other life safety systems. You will maintain records of all maintenance work. Test and repair fire alarms and other life safety systems following recognized national and industry standards. Install, replace, and/or relocate fire alarm components as required. This position will make suggestions for improvements and updates. Support campus construction and renovation projects through inspection and maintenance of life safety systems.

 

You will take “ownership” and have responsibility for the entirety of the fire alarm and life safety systems at Purdue Northwest (Hammond, Westville).

 

 

 

What We’re Looking For:

 

Education and Experience
Must have:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Three (3) years of experience as a Fire and Safety Equipment technician or equivalent experience in the inspection, maintenance, and repair of fire and safety equipment, and alarm systems
  • NICET Fire Alarm Systems Level I, or similar industry certification, or the ability to achieve Fire Alarm Level I certification within 6 months of hire
  • Valid driver’s license required

Skills that look good:

  • Knowledge of electricity, electronics, networking, and telephony
  • Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills 
  • Excellent record keeping skills
  • Must be able to work independently and in a team setting
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces and work from high places
  • Must be able to lift and carry 25 – 50 lbs. frequently and up to 60 lbs. Occasionally
  • Working knowledge of NFPA 72 specifications
  • Ability to:
    • work after hours on holidays and weekends and subject to 24-hour call back for emergencies
    • work overtime based on business need 
    •  meet deadlines
    • travel to various campus locations regularly and off site as needed
