Position Summary
The Engineering Associate 2 position holds the responsibility for the safe, reliable, and economic round-the-clock operation of the operational technology (OT) communication systems including the fiber infrastructure. Duties include engineering responsibilities for the design, construction, maintenance, and operation activities of our OT communication systems which support the transmission lines, substations, distribution system, gas systems, generation systems, emergency radio systems, control centers, data centers, and corporate network. The responsibilities include the following services: WAN/LAN network design/administration, new hardware & software evaluation/selection, business continuity/disaster recovery, and performance tuning/monitoring. The technologies supported include but not limited to ethernet, MPLS, MPLS-TP, VOIP, DWDM, SONET, PLC synchronization, and microwave.

- Tasks and Responsibilities*
*
- Focuses on operational/tactical aspects of the work & recommends improvements to processes and procedures
- Handles work content that is increasingly complex & applies engineering skills that include evaluation and ingenuity
- Manage communication projects including project scope, schedule, and budget. Monitor project progress, verify telecommunications project costs are appropriate, and the project does not exceed budget. Complete project documentation according to standards.
- Provide technical design, build, and support for CPS Energy’s evolving network architecture.
- Provide advanced technical support to maintain and operate the District’s telecommunication systems. Troubleshoot problems and resolve or provide problem resolution direction to others.
- Serve as subject matter expert for the following: Ethernet switching/routing, WAN/LAN, QoS, BGP, OSPF, ISIS, VRF, VOIP, IPSEC, MACsec, SSH, SSL, TCP/IP, SNMP, MPLS, MPLS-TP and related protocols .
- Performs network maintenance and system upgrades, including service packs, patches, hot fixes and security configurations.
- Provide work direction to crews to install communications equipment. Monitor compliance with project plans and specifications, applicable standards.
- Installs, maintains, repairs, monitors and administers layer 2 switch network, optical communications systems including SONET & DWDM, digital point-to-point microwave radio systems used in the control and telemetry of gas and electric systems, and power line carrier protective relaying channel equipment.
- Act as NERC subject matter expert for the team.
- Performs other project and process improvement initiatives as assigned.

- Minimum Education*
- Bachelors of Science degree in an engineering field from an ABET accredited four-year college or university or Demonstration of advanced skills or specialization applicable to the business area (Approval by Business Unit Executive Leadership, as related to the business need for Engineering Associate 2’s without their EIT)*
