| Position Summary | This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Telecommunications Technician 1 position for the IT Infrastructure Services department at Oregon State University (OSU). As a division within Oregon State University, UI&T shares and supports the University’s mission by assisting the University to extend all programs, teachings, research, and communication throughout the world. The services provided by the Technical and Solutions Architecture (TSA) units, including Academic Technology, Administrative Technologies, Digital Research, Identity and Access, and Networking and Infrastructure, assist the University community by facilitating transmission of knowledge and expertise to its members, thereby enhancing their ability to be productive, valued, and esteemed members of the University community, serving the State of Oregon. Services are provided to students, faculty, and staff for curricular, research, intellectual, and administrative activities and needs, as well as to the wider Oregon higher education and government community. There are approximately 150 faculty and classified employees in UI&T, as well as around 150 FTE student positions. Reporting to Field Services Manager the Technician works as part of a team that supports the various needs of the Networking, Telecom, and Cable Plant groups of UI&T. This position responsibilities will include; installing, replacing and repairing telephone and network equipment; installing, terminating and repairing telecom and network fiber and voice and data copper cabling; performing telecom cable plant service requests; and underground cable/pathway locates around the many buildings of OSU’s Corvallis and Newport campuses. The position is responsible maintaining accountability of supplies, materials and devices needed to perform work; inform supervisor of needs outside scope of responsibilities. Work with and provide direction to student workers as well as other Telecom Technicians. Additionally, this position will be doing some network switch configuration and installation, as well as deploying/troubleshooting Voice-over-IP phones. This position will be project planning/engineering for upgrade/implementation projects. Work may occasionally be scheduled at other OSU locations around the state. All work is performed in coordination with the respective groups. Due to the nature of the work and to least impact the customers, some tasks may need to be completed outside normal business hours. | Position Duties | 70% Technical: Work with Telecom, Networking and Cable Plant teams to perform assignments as needed. Open and close out Service Orders utilizing PCR 360 and Team Dynamics ticketing system. Configure, install and troubleshoot Voice-over-IP phone sets. Perform telephone adds, moves, changes and troubleshooting requests. Analyzes, diagnoses, troubleshoots and repairs all problems associated with telecommunications cabling systems. Have regular contact with technical peers to analyze repair problems or issues, questions regarding use of various telephone features, or other telephone service related matters. Basic L2 configuration of network switches, as well as deployment of the switches. Perform Wireless Access Point (WAP) installations, removals, repairs, patching and as built documentation. Perform telecom cable service requests; connect, patch, test, etc. as needed. Perform Underground Cable locates during normal and outside business hours and provide completion records. Install new cabling as needed, while adhering to the OSU Campus Wiring Standard, and all applicable local, state and federal rules and regulations. Maintain test equipment, updates and calibrations. Update NetBox software documentation notes, customer contact info and photos of EF, MDF, IDF rooms and spaces. Update CYDER entries as required. Maintain As Built documentation. Perform rack and stack installations for OSU UIT NOC team. 25% Organizational: Supervise workflow for Network Operations students (roughly 10 individuals). Project planning for building equipment refreshes/upgrades. Provide excellent customer service. Develop and maintain strong collaborative relationships with key campus IT partners. Maintain and secure necessary department tools and equipment in order to perform duties. Ensure all documentation and service orders are updated upon completion of work. Maintain a clean and professional work environment. 5% Information Security: Follow all UI&T and OSU information security polices, standards, rules, and procedures. Ensure UI&T and OSU information security policies, standards, rules, and procedures are implemented in the services and solutions provided by the unit. Participate in information security training and awareness programs. Maintain current knowledge of applicable industry standard security requirements and regulatory compliance training. |
| Minimum Qualifications |
Two years of experience installing, maintaining and repairing customer premise telephone station equipment and related ancillary equipment in a PBX and EKTS environment; AND Two years of experience installing and testing structured Category 5 (or greater) telecommunications cabling and wiring systems for both riser and horizontal station wiring requirements. |
| Additional Required Qualifications | • A valid, active State of Oregon Low Voltage electrician’s license / Possession of a “limited energy” or “low voltage” LEA B Building Codes Division certification/license, OR an apprenticeship in a limited energy or low voltage discipline. • Strong working knowledge of physical IT/Telecom cable plant infrastructures. • Able to maintain a team-oriented, professional, and cooperative attitude. • Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity. • This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months. • This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030. |
| Preferred (Special) Qualifications | • A minimum of four (4) years professional experience as a cable plant installer (Outside Plant and Inside Premise Cabling Projects) or related field for both fiber optic and copper infrastructures. • Experience with large enterprise cable plant infrastructures, such as large copper and fiber implementations spanning numerous buildings on a campus scale. • Excellent verbal, written and presentation communication skills. Ability to communicate with employees at all levels of the organization. • B.I.C.S.I. Certified technician/installer. |
| Working Conditions / Work Schedule | This position will require occasional duties outside normal OSU business hours, to least impact the operations and services provided to the customers. Position may require occasional duties/business trips to other OSU locations away from OSU Corvallis campus. Will require lifting of equipment to install in IT rooms and/or data center locations around OSU facilities. Work is on-site on the OSU main campus in Corvallis, OR. Due to the nature of the work, physical presence is required and tele-commuting is only acceptable on very limited scale, and only as agreed upon between employee and supervisor. |
