Basic Function Under the direction of the Sr. Director of IT Infrastructure, administer, support and maintain the University telephone and voice mail services; coordinate additions, moves and changes of telecommunication systems
Representative Duties
  • Administer, support and maintain the University telephone and voice services. E
  • Act as technical project lead in working with University departments to plan moves, adds, and changes of network and phone cabling infrastructure. E
  • Validate requirements, build design and estimates, then install, terminate, test, and label infrastructure for network, phone, wireless access points, card access, and security cameras in new and retrofit building projects. E
  • Install, splice, terminate, test, and label both copper and fiber phone and network cabling in underground pathways. E
  • Fish voice & data cables into walls and pathways.
  • Troubleshoot problems with network, phones, wireless access points, and security cameras. E
  • Assist Technical Support Technicians and Network Administrators in resolving network-related problems.
  • Maintain job-related equipment, tools, and vehicle.
  • Document and update internal processes, procedures, and configurations. E
  • Ensure that all network and telephone equipment is updated in the asset management system.
  • Coordinate the installation of phone and internet circuits supplied by outside vendors.
  • Enhance expertise and demonstrate a desire to keep learning by attending occasional development opportunities including conferences, seminars, and online presentations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

E = Essential Duties

Knowledge Of ANSI and BICSI standards for data infrastructure installation.
● Effective communications skills – written, verbal and interpersonal; ability to discuss problems with customers and ensure quick and proper trouble diagnosis to correct problem in least amount of time
● Advanced call routing
● Laws, rules and regulations related to telecommunications
● Wiring and cabling practices and standards
● Operating a computer and related software
Ability To ● Coordinate work involving both outside consultants and internal employees.
● Use tact and diplomacy and maintain a high level of confidentiality.
● Be self-motivated to complete projects and learn new technologies.
● Personable, a strong team player, able to respond effectively to direction, and a willingness to learn from others.
● Handle multiple tasks when faced with interruptions, and fluctuating workloads.
● Work evenings and weekends as needed
● Rotate as an emergency contact, responding to system and service outages.
● Stoop, bend, climb ladders, pull wire, kneel, and crawl to make repairs, adjust, and/or install equipment
● Work on ladders, scaffolding, and other tall structures
Minimum Qualifications Any Combination equivalent to: Associates degree or successful completion of sixty (60) college credit hours and four years of experience with network and voice cabling, fiber optics, phone system operation, VoIP phone and voicemail programming, adds, and changes.
Preferred Qualifications ● A relevant bachelor’s degree is preferred;
● Experience with Mitel VoIP phone and voicemail programming, adds, and changes
● Experience with datacenter and teledata room facilities infrastructure design, including best practices for power, battery backup (UPS), temperature, humidity, and air conditioning.
● Experience with telecommunications systems, including voice switching and voicemail systems.
● Experience with Windows Server
Licenses and other requirements Valid driver license.
Environment Indoor and outdoor environment ; constant interruptions
Hiring Range Commensurate with experience
