County of San Diego Sheriff’s Wireless Services Division is seeking candidates for Telecommunications Technician I. Telecommunications Technicians service large public safety land mobile and microwave radio systems. The Telecommunications Technician I will install, maintain, diagnose, construct, and service a variety of telecommunications equipment such as amplitude and frequency modulated land mobile, microwave, and antenna/cavity systems.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. One (1) year of experience installing relatively complex electronic telecommunication equipment for mobile radios, microwave, or other relatively complex electronic systems;

AND,

2. An additional year of telecommunications experience;
OR,
an associate’s degree or higher from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency in telecommunications, electronics, or a related field;
OR,
military certification equivalent to an AA degree or higher in telecommunications, electronics or a related field;
OR,
one (1) year experience as a Telecommunications Technician Trainee with the County of San Diego;
OR,
an equivalent combination of the above.

Please note:

  • Additional years of experience as described above may substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis; OR, completion of appropriate course work from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency may substitute for the experience requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • IT experience such as configuring and connecting routers, switches, computers and WIFI networks, and knowledge of various routing protocols and concepts is highly desirable.

Beginning July 1, 2022, the Department of Human Resources will remove personally identifiable information from all new recruitments. WORKING CONDITIONS
Exposure to high frequency noise and radio-frequency radiation including microwave radiation; exposure to noxious fumes; exposure to high voltage; working from antenna towers, ceilings, and other remote places; exposure to hot soldering irons; exposure to adverse weather conditions. These positions are subject to emergency call on a 24-hour basis.

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION
Incumbents must have a reputation for honesty and trustworthiness. Misdemeanor and/or felony convictions may be disqualifying depending on type, number, severity, and recency. Prior to appointment, candidates will be subject to a background investigation which may include a psychological, truth verification or other examination or test.


CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT

As part of the County of San Diego’s pre-employment process, prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre-employment medical screening prior to beginning County employment. Additional types of background investigations may be conducted based on the job-related activities of the position.

EVALUATION
The names of qualified candidates will be placed on a six (6) month employment list based on scores received during the evaluation of information contained in their employment application and supplemental questionnaire.
