Advanced Underground Utility Locating
PAY IS $18-$30/HR (BASE) DEPENDING ON EXPERIENCE
For private and public locates. This means you have spent a least 4-6 months with a prior utility locating company, using radio utility locators or GPR
For no experience– must have a utility/construction background.
GPR (IT’S OKAY IF YOU HAVE NO EXPERIENCE IN GPR) or other means to locate underground utilities, such as power lines, water lines, gas lines, communication lines, sewer and so forth.
Our training is performed on three separate devices with a full briefing on each device after having some in field training. We want to train you to fully understand the limitations of each device and its strengths and weaknesses. These devices can be complicated but training will be in simplest to most complicated. This will take approx. 4-6 months and will be at a training wage. We are looking with someone who is dedicated, has a fast learning curve and willing to stay in the area of (BEND, OR) for 3-5 years.
Utility locating is the ability to locate underground utilities, such as power lines, water lines, gas lines, communication lines, sewer and so forth. Underground utility management is becoming more and more important and we plan on being the best company for our employees and our customers.

Training
Our locators are trained and retrained from the ground up taking approximately 2-3 months for training. Training will start at 36-40hrs/wk. This will be hands-on for each device, you will be mentored on every aspect of utility locating, clamping, direct connections, unbonding, poc, and other methods. First, you will be given smaller locates / small tasks to start while your trainer is with you as you gradually gain experience on each device and each set of varied circumstances you will advance to more complicated jobs. Training will be at a reduced rate to your normal rate then once training is complete, the full hourly wage will be in place for both normal locating and gpr.

RESPONSIBILITIES
This position is for a private utility locator and is very different from a public utility locator.
Under the direction of a company supervisor, performs work that involves visual inspection of predefined construction areas and reading and interpretation of utility maps to determine the presence of underground utilities, while using special electronic equipment to actually detect and locate said utilities. The utilities may include (but not be limited to) gas, electric, cable TV, telecommunications, sanitary sewer, water lines, street lighting, and other facilities within the predefined construction area. These utilities are mostly private with a mix of public.
- Use laptop computer or other devices to receive, document and close out excavation notices, both during normal hours and after hours.
- Read and interpret utility maps/prints to identify the type and size of underground utilities.
- Use assigned communication equipment to effectively communicate with excavators, utility reps, and company personnel, regarding underground facilities.
- Operate different electronic detection equipment, to locate and mark underground facilities within prescribed accuracy limits.
- Perform light excavation with a shovel, to expose buried utilities when necessary.
- Provide accurate documentation and or sketches related to all locates completed using google earth.
- Receive and respond to excavation notices during normal and after hours in accordance with established time requirements.
- Operate company vehicle in a safe manner, and maintain a professional appearance.
- Be able to perform manhole entry using assigned equipment and safety devices.
- Perform work in all weather conditions, during normal and after hours.
- We don’t want to micromanage our employees, self-starters and reliable individuals welcome.
- Must be able to think through and link utilities underground.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND HOURS
- Outdoor working environment; extensive walking on various types of terrain.
- Driving a vehicle to and from work sites; seasonal heat and cold or other weather conditions.
- Normal working hours between 6:00 am to 6:00 pm; limited work hours after sunset and weekends except for periodic on-call duty. As a construction related industry, there may be periods of time during the winter when the company may not be able to provide 40 hours a week.
- Normal work is anywhere from 30-40 hours a week.
REQUIREMENTS
- High School Diploma, or GED.
- (Preferred but not required) At least 6-12 months of utility training/experience.
- must live in greater BEND, OR Area.
Valid State driver’s license,
- Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen and background checks.
- Upon employment, will be subject to random drug testing in compliance with federal, state and company guidelines.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
- Need to complete AUUL locator infield assessment and training program, and pass the applicable written test.
- Develop general knowledge of State and Local damage prevention regulations from 811 and Digsafe program.
- Develop general knowledge of utility construction patterns and layout.
- Learn and apply safety measures relating to motor vehicle operations, manhole entry, and other field related matters.
- Learn the basic skills required within NULCA’s Locator Competency Standards and the U.S. DOT
- Office of Pipeline Safety as they relate to gas line locating and Operator qualifications.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES
- Regular use of hands and fingers to operate specialized equipment and tools; reaching overhead above the shoulders and horizontally; bending at the waist; standing and or walking for extended periods of time; hearing and speaking to exchange information; carrying 3-5 lb. electronic locating equipment for extended periods of time; lifting objects up to 50 pounds or lifting in excess of 50 lbs. with tool aids.
HAZARDS
- Driving a vehicle during adverse weather conditions, in heavy traffic or at night
- Working around objects and machinery in construction areas.
- Walking on uneven ground and terrain.
- Walking on snow, Ice, water saturated surfaces, and mud.
