Classification title (Workplace Safety Training Specialist)
This position, with the Workplace Safety Training and Inspections Program, oversees and conducts occupational safety and health training sessions in English. Workplace Safety Training Specialist IV enjoy a rewardable profession by helping to ensure that Texas employers and their workers receive safety and health training services to identify and provide knowledge to those attending on how to identify, avoid and report occupational safety and health hazards to reduce work-related injuries and illnesses. Workplace Safety Training Specialist IV receives ongoing professional development and training, work regular hours with flexible schedules, and hones their occupational safety and health training skills by working with employers in a variety of industries each day.
This position:
- The Training Specialist IV performs complex (senior-level) training work.
- Work involves planning, designing, organizing, conducting, and evaluating educational and training programs in English.
- Coordinating and conducting training sessions; and promoting the use of training services, methods, and techniques.
- Observes all applicable agency policies and procedures, including adhering to established leave and attendance policies, safety rules and regulations, and use of state property.
- Works under limited supervision with moderate latitude in the use of initiative and independent judgment.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
This position requires:
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university.
- Six months of full-time experience in education and/or training and three years of full-time experience in performing occupational safety and health work.
- Must have English language skills (oral and written).
- Education and experience relevant to position requirements be substituted for one another on a year-for-year basis.
Additional job details:
- This position be eligible for hybrid telecommuting. Employees must have a secure, dedicated workspace with Internet service, the ability to maintain a reliable consistent work schedule, and be available for weekly meetings and group collaboration via Microsoft Teams and other video platform applications during regular business hours.
- The interview will include a reading and writing test.
- The interview will include a 30-minute PPT presentation. If scheduled for an interview, you will be provided with a variety of safety and health topics to select your presentation topic.
Preferences for this position include:
- Five years of full-time experience in performing occupational safety and health work.
- Bachelor’s degree in health and safety field.
- Occupational safety designations, such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Occupational Health & Safety Technician (OHST), or Certified Safety and Health Official (CSHO).
- OSHA Construction and General Industry Outreach Trainer experience.
- Five years of training experience covering occupational safety topics.
This position requires demonstrated knowledge of:
- Training procedures and techniques
- Education principles, practices, and techniques
- Group dynamics and interpersonal relations
- Instructional design and curriculum development
- Occupational safety and health rules, regulations, and standards
- Adult learning theory and training
This position requires demonstrated skill in:
- providing training and instruction
- customer service principles
- effective oral and written communication
- use of common PC applications in the Windows environment, including word processing, email, Internet, spreadsheets, and database applications
- prioritizing workload to meet continuous deadlines; and
- planning, organizing, and managing long and short-term projects
- using common video conferencing platforms, Zoom, Teams, and Skype
- Planning, decision-making and problem-solving
This position requires the demonstrated ability to:
- lead and coordinate all aspects of major training projects from initial concept to completion
- instruct others and formulate training objectives
- evaluate training objectives, requirements, and delivery effectiveness
- assess training needs and plan effectively
- express ideas clearly and concisely
- conduct public speaking with large and small audiences
- conduct adult learning seminars
- maintain knowledge of current safety regulations and best practices
- maintain working relationships with employees at all levels within the organization
- communicate effectively with the public
- research methods of hazard abatement and injury prevention travel to and from training venues statewide; and
- work independently with limited supervision
