Principal Network Engineer I

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Principal Network Engineer will share the same duties and responsibilities as other network engineers but in a leadership role which will require additional tasks. You may be required to train other network engineers, author reports detailing how projects were undertaken or present complex proposals for client solutions. Daily activities and duties include the installation of hardware, regular system maintenance, optimization of network performance, monitoring, and responding to alarms as well as work during night hours. You will be responsible for network designs, creation, installation, and maintenance. You will be tasked with identifying the company’s infrastructure needs and designing a network that meets – or exceeds – the requirements under the department’s leadership and the vision of the VP of Technical Operations. Traditional network engineering responsibilities include assisting with customer deployments including the installation of CPE devices, firewalls, internal servers, testing, and associated troubleshooting issues related to Ethernet and IP connectivity. Additional responsibilities include logging into NOC phone queues, taking calls from customers, other carriers, or field personnel. Some “after normal business hours” work will require a flexible work schedule. As a network engineer, you are responsible for the daily operations of our data network and ensure we provide the best service possible.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Design and plan new networks
- Maintain IP Scopes
- Align the network strategy to the vision and direction of management
- Test, verify, and maintain equipment firmware and software provisioning
- Identify network needs and address capacity as is necessary
- Present proposals and designs
- Train and mentor fellow network engineers
- Project manage network upgrades as assigned
- Maintain existing networks
- Troubleshoot issues as they arise
- Enhance existing infrastructure
- Ensure compliance with relevant regulations
- Maintain network security such as firewalls, intrusion prevention, and issue mitigation
- Define network access rights
- Develop and implement standard operating procedures once approved by management
- Recommend new technologies to enhance performance or additional service offerings
- Prepare bill of materials, timelines, and workflows
- Author system configuration documents for on-going reference
- Provide technical support in installations and maintenances of network systems
- Support existing networks and perform upgrades as needed.
- Prepare disaster recovery procedures & contingency plans during system failures
- Perform network routing, cabling, and switching activities
- Design network topologies and identify and correct network non-compliance issues
- Respond promptly during outages and recommend solutions for performance issues
- Perform root cause analysis of network issues and recommend corrective actions
- Develop and produce complex documentation for installation, network topology, and troubleshooting of communications hardware or software
- Build and implement Ethernet, MPLS/VPLS, & VLAN circuits
- Perform IP hardware, circuit, and backbone capacity planning
- Other duties as assigned
SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ethernet, Routing, Switching, VPNs, & ACLs
- Understanding of VoIP
- Excellent communication skills – necessary for interaction with the customer and other team members
- Understanding Optical Transport systems
- Stay current on technology and equipment roadmaps
- Familiar with ARIN process and use of RADb
CERTIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Professional level networking certification required
- Maintain certifications
- Familiar with Metro-Ethernet Standards
- Recommend Network Design experience
- Project management experience a plus.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $80,000.00 – $110,000.00 per year
