We are currently hiring women under our AWIT- Aecon Women in Trades Program for Full-Time Locator positions. No prior experience needed! Aecon will provide paid in-depth training to perform the job successfully.

  • Reporting to the Superintendent, the Utility and Private Utility Locator/ Damage Prevention Technician will be responsible for performing utility locates for Underground utilities including gas lines, telephone cables, water pipes, hydro structures, and fibre optic telecom cables.
  • Our technicians are trained to ensure utilities are located to both industry and Aecon standards. We provide technicians with the technology and know-how to produce accurate locates.

Aecon provides an extensive safety-first training program for new Locators or those interested in getting into the industry. Please note that this is a unionized role, and it is a requirement to join the union upon acceptance.

What You’ll Do Here:

Aecon works as a contractor for a leading telecom company in Canada. Our Locators locate utilities (Hydro, Gas, water etc.) Locators are dispatched from their homes to various jobs/locations through out the shift. Each job will be slightly different and requires problem solving, technical abilities and customer service skills. This work is done independently with communication to the dispatch team and a support network of other locators and field supervisors to assist with problem solving etc. As services expand our locators are continuously learning and keeping up to date with the newest technology. We provide a robust training program and continuous learning opportunities.

  • Locate underground utilities accurately by verifying utility records and using electronic locating equipment
  • Understand and respond to work requests delegated by Supervisor.
  • Knowledge of decrypting utility records.
  • Ability to effectively document utility locates and follow appropriate documentation procedure.
  • Willingness to work on-call shifts for 24-hour emergency response.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as required

What You Bring to the Team:

  • Self-motivated – ability to work independently on timelines and stay productive under minimal supervision
  • Strong computer skills- MS Excel, MS Word, MS Project
  • A valid G class driver’s license, and clean driving record is required
  • Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills
  • Ability to work accurately and problem solve under pressure
  • Willingness to work flexible and/or long hours when required to meet deadlines
  • Previous construction experience is an asset
  • Experience with private locates, pre-eng locates and locates of sewers considered an asset
