FOR USE BY UAB IT ONLY: This position will provide leadership and direction to departments which support UAB through enterprise technology services. To direct and oversee all aspects of the University Network and Telecommunications, including Wireless, Mobile, VPN, Firewall, DNS, DHCP, IPAM, Load-balancers, Cable and Fiber Plant. To set the vision and goals for the team; guide, direct, coach and mentor employees to attain or exceed objectives by providing consultative advice and identifying areas of opportunity to better serve customers. To evaluate, monitor and manage assigned network providers and those integrations and quick resolution of incidents that impact UAB end-users.

Responsibilities:

  • Directs network and telecommunication services/switching operations and the activities of the staff to ensure proper procedures and practices are followed. Develops new service enhancements/offerings and new technology rollouts when needed.
  • Oversees the engineering of the UAB network and telecommunications and distribution systems for growth, renovation, or replacement.
  • Provides department oversight of the RFI/RFQ/ITB procurement process for network, voice and cabling contracts. Prepares cost analysis of projects and bids. Prepares documentation for unit bid contract and evaluates and awards plant construction project contracts. Approves Authorization for Payment to Accounts Payable for contractors invoicing.
  • Provides oversight for all communication construction, installation, and engineering projects. Reviews vendor contracts for switching systems, conduit systems, underground, buried, and aerial copper and fiber optic cable facilities. Oversees creation of documentation for communication construction projects.
  • Assists the Chief Technology Officer in developing and implementing long- and short-range plans and capital and operating budgets. Performs long and short term inside/outside cable plant facility planning and makes recommendations regarding capital budget needs.
  • Develops procedures specific to network, voice and associated systems and services. Creates reports as needed to summarize service levels, trouble tickets and other work activities conducted for the previous year. Creates goals for employees to accomplish and enhance their work performance and skills.
  • Leads teams in support of responsible functions.  Works closely with other IT managers and leaders as a member of the management team.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • (Annual Salary:  $132,790 – $215,790)

     

    Qualifications

     

    Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems or a related field and ten (10) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

    The ideal candidate will be experienced in managing and leading network services and highly technical teams preferred.  Ability to serve as a leader within the IT organization and partner with other leaders to execute organizational imperatives and projects is necessary for success.  Physical Requirements: May be required to lift up to 50lbs.
