About the Role

Key responsibilities include the following:

  • Generating and sharing insights on how to drive digital inclusion with a particular focus on the digital and financial gender divide; understanding the barriers to women’s access to and use of mobile, and how these can be addressed; and evaluating the social and commercial impact of initiatives to reach women with mobile service.
  • Formulating and leading quantitative and qualitative primary research projects from brief to debrief, to generate high quality data and insights on women’s digital and financial inclusion.
  • Managing the annual Consumer Survey; a large-scale quantitative survey conducted across low- and middle-income countries. This includes selecting and managing an external research firm; collaboratively updating the survey as needed; approving sampling plans and monitoring metrics.
  • Analysing data, including operator data, engaging with operators and relevant stakeholders, to identify key findings and industry trends.
  • Leading on the analysis and drafting of key Connected Women reports. This has included the Mobile Gender Gap

  • Responding to ad-hoc requests from industry partners, members of the team and other GSMA departments in a timely and engaging manner
  • Keeping track of external studies, digital innovations, and stakeholder initiatives advancing inclusion through mobile, particularly for women.
  • Disseminate research and learnings through written reports, case studies, blogs, presentations at conferences, meetings and workshops with relevant stakeholders.
  • Working effectively with other members of the team as well as across the GSMA. This includes working closely with other teams, including the Mobile Money Team, on relevant insights and with the Marketing team to disseminate outputs.

About You

You will have a genuine interest in driving digital inclusion and how mobile can empower women in low- and middle-income countries

We welcome applications from individuals with the following demonstrated qualifications and skills:

  • Experience of primary research, and a strong understanding of the specific considerations of researching women in low- and middle-income countries.
  • Prior experience of managing externally commissioned research projects from end-to-end – either client or agency side, either qualitative or quantitative.
  • Familiarity with a range of research methodologies, qualitative and quantitative, as well as strong data analysis skills and capacity to interrogate large amounts of data.
  • Experience of/genuine interested in driving digital inclusion and reducing the gender gaps in mobile access and use in low- and middle-income countries including understanding the commercial and social benefits that are presented by doing this.
  • Fluent and compelling written and oral communications skills in English including the ability to accurately and concisely summarise large volumes of intelligence into both slide decks and reports.
  • Ability to isolate and translate problems/requirements into research and analysis projects.
  • First rate project management skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks at the same time as well as strong stakeholder management experience.
  • Excellent analytical thinking skills, including the ability to generate frameworks and structured analysis and to draw creatively from a wide range of data sources to answer difficult and sometimes abstract questions.
  • Some commercial experience gained within telecoms or other industries (e.g. as a management consultant, as part of a research agency or from working for an operator or telco industry body).
  • A self-starter, highly motivated to develop initiatives and drive them through to completion, who is able to work independently with an entrepreneurial, creative, can-do orientation.
  • Experience of working in a developing country context is preferred.
