IT Networks & Telecommunications

Duties

This position reports to the Senior Network Engineer (IT Network & Telecommunications Senior) and is responsible for providing professional network services throughout the agency. The position will work independently or in a team environment and serves as the second-highest technical professional in Network Services.

Duties include but are not limited to:

Network Management

  • Analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve network outages and issues across the agency.
  • Develop design proposals, implement, and manage network cabling installations for assigned projects statewide.
  • Monitor the health of all State Parks networks.
  • Negotiate agreements with vendors and other agencies.

Connectivity in Parks

  • Determine appropriate connectivity for a given location – Virtual Private Network (VPN), Direct State Government Network (SGN) connection.
  • Administer and support Wide-Area Network (WAN) connections as allocated.
  • Coordinate and acquire internet service.
  • Act as liaison with telecommunication vendors to aid in the evaluation of local wired and cellular data communications, architectures, new technologies, devices, and protocols.
  • Coordinate with Washington Technology Solutions (WaTech) to provide services to the parks.

Network Operation

  • Modify, develop, and maintain state-wide physical network infrastructure, including switches, cabling, and routers.
  • Utilize network analyzing equipment and enhanced knowledge to detect usual and unusual activity or a rogue presence on Parks and State Government Networks.
  • Ensure operational integrity of networks and connectivity to provide constant uptime and availability.

Wi-Fi installations, administration, and coordination

  • Work independently under the direction of the Senior Network Engineer to coordinate install, configure, test, and administer Wi-Fi installations.
  • Liaison with WaTech and vendors to provide Wi-Fi solutions and resolve issues.
  • Manage Wi-Fi projects in parks as allocated.

Site-to-site VPN

  • Work independently under the direction of the Senior Network Engineer to configure, install, support, and maintain Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) for remote agency locations.
  • Troubleshoot connectivity issues and work with park staff to get better connectivity at park locations.

Install, maintain, and administer switches and routers

  • Serve as the secondary engineer and backup to the highest-level authority for the WSPRC statewide network infrastructure.
  • Independently manage assigned jurisdictions for the network.
  • Plan for and replace network infrastructure equipment as needed.
  • Program and configure networking equipment to provide a secure computing platform for all IT Services.

Telecommunication Administration

  • Serve as backup telecommunications administrator and operational support for WSPRC telecoms systems.
  • Analyze and reviews telecoms service requests and finds a technical resolution based on available solutions.
  • Learns to operate and maintain new telecoms technologies, assists in transition to those technologies.
  • Create and manage agency network accounts, access, and permissions.
  • Provide backup for mobile phone and landline account management.
Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a closely related field.
  • Three (3) years of experience in enterprise-level network administration (analyzing, designing, implementing, troubleshooting, and maintaining wired and wireless networking infrastructures and experience working with network services such as configuring & maintaining router and switches in an IP centric environment).

OR

  • Associate’s degree in Computer Science or a closely related field.
  • Five (5) years of experience in enterprise-level network administration (analyzing, designing, implementing, troubleshooting, and maintaining wired and wireless networking infrastructures and experience working with network services such as configuring & maintaining router and switches in an IP centric environment).

AND

  • Valid unrestricted (except for corrective lenses) driver’s license.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two (2) years of experience with Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) & Cisco networking products in an Internet Protocol (IP) routed environment with Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs).
  • One (1) year of experience with Fortinet firewalls and Internet Protocol Security (IPSec) Virtual Private Networks (VPNs).
  • One (1) year of experience with wireless bridges.
  • One (1) year of Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) experience.
  • Network+ certification.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Ability to install network and server equipment weighing up to 60 pounds in standard network and server racks.
