The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Information Technology Services organization is seeking an experienced Network Engineer who possesses an exceptional commitment to service excellence to join our Enterprise Technology Services team, supporting a team of diverse and talented professionals in support of our mission to deliver exceptional service to the UCLA campus enterprise.

As a member of the Network Services team, the Network Engineer participates in network planning, deployment, management and operational support for the UCLA Campus Backbone Network (CBN), Campus wireless network, Campus Data Center network, departmental networks and Voice Over IP (VoIP) network. Responsibilities include installation, configuration, testing and maintenance of existing hardware and software, investigation and resolution of complex network problems, outages or incidents, traffic analysis, network performance and optimization, fault tolerance, authentication and documentation of network configuration, wiring, equipment and procedures/work instructions. Additional responsibilities include compiling a list of network hardware, optics, etc. for assigned projects and placing an order request with support staff, conducting new product field testing and laboratory setup and execution of functional, stress and interoperability testing. The Network Engineer will also participate as part of the Network Operations Center (NOC) team providing network support to campus Departmental and Health System Network Coordinators as well as any other on-campus or off-campus inquiries. Further responsibilities include on-call rotation and after-hours support as assigned or requested.

Required/Preferred

Five or more years of experience supporting network operations for a large, complex, mission-critical applications and communications.

Required

Detailed knowledge and experience with multiple network communications standards such as IPv4, IPv6, Multicast, TCP/IP Suite, DHCP, 802.11x, and Domain Name Service (DNS).

Required

Ability to analyze network problems including fault isolation, problem resolution and service restoration.

Required

Demonstrated hands-on experience with administration of Local Area Network, Wide Area Network, Service Provider Network, and Enterprise Network technologies.

Required

Skill to manage multi-protocol routers and layer 2/3 switches; ability to configure Cisco routers and switches; knowledge of the Cisco IOS Command Hierarchy.

Required

Ability and willingness to provide after-hours technical support as assigned.

Required

Verbal and written communication skill to effectively convey technical information to non-technical audiences; ability to develop and maintain detailed documentation.

Required

Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications, Computer Science, Engineering (or related) OR equivalent combination of education and experience.

Hands on experience using a trouble/service ticketing system, and Network Monitoring Systems.

Ability to move, carry or lift items up to 40 pounds with assistance.

Ability to drive university vehicle to work locations on and off campus.

Detailed knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server 2000/2003.

Hands on experience using the InfoBlox ipam/dhcp/dns appliance or similar tool.

Experience with configuring Arista, Brocade and Juniper routers and/or switches.

Detailed knowledge of wireless protocols with emphasis on IEE802.11.

Possession of valid CA driver’s license for operation of university vehicles.
