Job Summary
As part of the Enterprise Architecture organization, the Senior Expert, Telecom Architect is driven by understanding the internal and external customer and utilizing technology to transform the business. The position focus is directed towards the customer and uses leading technology to drive innovative, enhanced, streamlined, modern and cost effective business enablement. Further, he/she will define and drive best-in-class Telecom architecture principles focused on business value, performance, security, measurability and process driven continuous improvement.
Main Responsibilities
Build Telecom architectures
- Is considered a thought leader for Telecom architecture and provides knowledge and coaching to stakeholders and peer architects
- Introduces and leads Telecom transformation through enterprise architecture efforts and artefact documentation
- Defines the Telecom transformation journey by developing the Telecom vision, patterns, use cases, principles, strategy, operating model, and architecture
- Understands CN’s business and information technology to translate it into a telecom target architecture to rapidly integrate new technologies to fuel CN digital transformation
- Applies automation to generate information, make decisions, and execute process activities
- Focuses on the outcome rather than the problem
- Focuses on the architecture as a whole while peer architects deal with the individual parts of the architecture
- Very knowledgeable with multiple technologies such as, Wireless, Optical, MPLS core, WAN access, Cloud, radio, cameras, DNS and telephony services.
- Puts in place best-in-class Telecom architecture processes for designing large scale and sophisticated technology systems
- Works with peer architects, to produce and maintain appropriate relationships between business, information, application, technology and solution architects to build consistent architecture
- Ensures alignment with corporate information standards and policies, as well as all areas of enterprise architecture
Technical Leadership
- Looks for and evaluates new practices and technology disruptors which may impact the Telecom architecture
- Incorporates new best practices into the Telecom architecture practice
- Provides key input on technologies at CN to drive Telecom transformation
- Positions the use of the new technology within the Telecom architecture
- Provides practical advice about Telecom architecture and Telecom automation
- Works with peer architects to provide guidance on a comprehensive governance model to ensure solutions are developed according to the defined Telecom architecture
Manage Relationships
- Educates and explains how Telecom architecture aids in achieving CN’s business strategy and delivery of the expected business outcomes
- Educates and explains the purpose, value and use of the various Telecom architecture models
- Educates and influences I&T so everyone understands Telecom architecture strategy and outcomes
- Is a champion for effective change
- Communicates deliverables with stakeholders in architecture, integration, operation, supply management, legal and various business lines.
REQUIREMENTS
Education/Certification/Designation
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems or a related study, or equivalent related project experience.
Skills/Knowledge
Lead and influence people in various roles and positions.
Explain Telecom concepts in a practical manner
Excellent knowledge and practitioner of design thinking
Uses collaborative design to focus on the overall outcome
In-depth experience developing a Telecom vision, principles, strategy, operating model, and architecture
Ability to research, interpret, and articulate how internal and external customers interact across the entire enterprise
Demonstrated capability to understand complex business operations and needs and how they are linked to technological solutions that provide practical business value
Significant and proven experience in applying a structured approach to problem resolution
Ability to derive technical requirements from vaguely formulated business needs
Strong analytical and conceptual skills
Strong communication skills – ability to create material for a variety of stakeholders.
Motivated by speed, short-term results while remaining focused on the Telecom vision and architecture
Knowledge of best practices and latest trends in the Telecom architecture and technologies (Wireless, Optical, MPLS core, WAN access, Cloud, radio, cameras, DNS and telephony services)
Experience
15+ years experience in various architecture roles, with recent experience in Telecom transformation
Assets
Familiarity with Architecture framework (Togaf, Zachman)
Familiarity with modeling tools such Sparx Enterprise Architect
Knowledge of rail, transportation or logistics industry
Working Conditions
Occasional business travel in accordance with CN policy for meetings with ecosystem partners or to attend industry events or conferences.
