Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal advice and services on issues concerning the rights, obligations, risks and privileges of the organization
  • Protect the organization’s rights in contract negotiations, settlements and litigation
  • Acquire deep knowledge of the industry and the specific business practices of UnitedHealth Group so as to best advise senior business leaders
  • Manage all aspects of affirmative and defensive litigation and arbitrations involving the company; provide legal counsel in connection with internal investigations and responses to government inquiries; provide legal advice on complex and sensitive matters regarding various laws and regulations applicable to health care; help establish and implement creative and strategic initiatives that support the company’s internal and external stakeholders
  • This position reports directly to Senior Associate General Counsel

Required Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate degree
  • 10+ years of legal experience with a law firm, in-house legal department or government office
  • Experience managing investigations and drafting complaints / demands in courts and arbitration forums
  • Experience complex civil cases for plaintiffs and defendants in Federal District Courts
  • First chair trial and/or arbitration experience
  • Knowledge of health care and/or regulatory law
  • Full COVID-19 vaccination is an essential job function of this role. Candidates located in states that mandate COVID-19 booster doses must also comply with those state requirements. Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience interacting with regulatory and law enforcement agencies
  • Significant trial, arbitration and negotiation experience
  • Work as an Assistant United States Attorney, Assistant Attorney General and/or attorney with HHS
  • Familiarity with False Claims Act, Anti-Kickback Statute, state consumer protection and deceptive trade practices laws, Stark Law, HIPAA, ERISA, and various other healthcare laws and regulations, as well as Medicare, Medicaid and commercial insurance plans
  • Understanding of health care benefit coverage and medical policy development
  • Understanding of business problems related to assigned legal projects
  • Solid understanding of health insurance and/or managed care industry
  • Solid understanding of business, accounting and finance topics
  • Well-developed written and verbal communications skills
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Proven success in collaborating across a matrixed business and legal environment
  • Ability to evaluate and determine appropriate legal course of action to meet business unit needs
  • Ability to build and maintain rapport with superiors, peers, subordinates, and external company contacts

Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado residents is $134,200 to $257,700. The salary range for Connecticut / Nevada residents is $134,200 to $257,700. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
