UPN is seeking an experienced Construction Technician – Field Service Engineer for our Field Operations group in Las Cruces, NM. This candidate will be responsible for installation, testing, service activation, and the day-to-day maintenance of UPN’s IP Core and Data networks, oversee the construction activities that take place on the worksite and will be involved in the supervision of construction contractors in the field. This candidate will also plan, direct and coordinate activities pertaining to the daily operation of the outside fiber plant to include estimating, engineering, permitting, contracting, designing and maintenance of new fiber optic network build projects and existing fiber facility relocations.
Responsibilities include:
- Oversees the resolution of all network issues within all data center colocation space and UPN-owned sites.
- Ensures that all data center colocation spaces are maintained within site compliance standards (access, security, space management practices, and power).
- Manages all Emergency/Scheduled Maintenance activities for UPN.
- Manages all Trouble Ticket activities for UPN.
- Manages all Network Outage Events for UPN (fiber cuts, equipment failure, RCA/RFO)
- Performs Inventory Management for new projects, spares/maintenance, and return/RMA activities.
- Provides onsite support for inventory audit & reconciliation processes.
- Develop accurate Outside Plant Fiber construction estimates for new opportunities and maintenance requirements.
- Will handle the day-to-day operations of the Outside Plant Fiber network to include Engineering, permitting, contracting, designing, and maintaining of new building adds and existing Fiber facility relocations.
- Works closely with upstream groups, completing fiber verification requests, design, permit and manage construction of new fiber network.
- Monitors infrastructure builds and reviews/punch lists and approves work has met UPN’s construction standards.
- Will meet with contractors, Right of Way Representatives, Engineering firms, customers, other OSP engineers and vendors to coordinate/mitigate projects.
- Ability to work one-on-one with customer, as well as in a team setting.
- Installation, turn up, testing, and maintaining network equipment at data centers and customer locations (Cisco ASR920, NCS540, and UPS support units).
- Managing and scheduling with both internal and external customers for installs, maintenance, and network events.
- Assist with Emergency/Scheduled Maintenance activities.
- Respond to Trouble Ticket activities as assigned.
- Respond to Network Outage Events (fiber damage, equipment failure)
- Maintaining a company provided vehicle.
- Other duties assigned by management.
Job Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- 3-5+ years of OSP fiber engineering and construction experience, telecom experience preferred.
- Strong OSP construction knowledge with ability to read/red-line construction drawings to facilitate new builds, relocations, and emergency repairs.
- Exposure to permitting, engineering, contractor management, fiber splicing, project management, different types of underground and aerial cable plant installation and maintenance.
- Assumes responsibility for contribution to the success of major or multiple projects and is periodically called upon to make decisions.
- Strong communication skills; thorough and attentive to details; able to prioritize and multitask; proactive and deadline oriented.
- Holding or working towards data certifications preferred.
- Cisco router and switching administration (29xx, 37xx, 72xx, 65xx models, ASR901, ASR903).
- Juniper switch administration.
- Knowledge of inside plant cabling/wiring, power plant services.
- Knowledge of cross connect solutions and configurations.
- Knowledge of test equipment (EXFO) for testing RFC2544 standards and OTDR.
- Knowledge of IPSEC VPN.
- Working knowledge of various monitoring tools (Wireshark, Solarwinds, Cacti, MRTG).
- Experience supporting production/enterprise networks with high availability SLAs.
- Demonstrable skills in the following: DNS, HSRP/VRRP, OSPF, BGP, MPLS, DWDM, STP, and L2 switching. CCNA or CCNP preferred, not required.
- Computer skills necessary in Word, Excel, Visio, SecureCRT, Putty, SQL.
- Willingness to learn new technologies and maintain industry knowledge.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Travel required (up to 30% based on task or project requirements).
- On-Call services after normal business hours required.
