Job Summary:

The Information and Technology Services (ITS) organization has an exciting opportunity to employ a Telecommunications Software Engineer as a member of the Unified Communications Infrastructure Group.

This position is responsible for the network and voice communications systems and tools and will collaborate with ITS Infrastructure technical teams on production support, tool development and project efforts. Reporting to the Communications Systems Operations Manager, the incumbent will configure, test, deploy, and maintain performance monitoring and measuring network tools for the Linux environment. This position requires someone who participates with the team. Someone who will resolve problems, has experience in a role providing excellent customer service, demonstrates the ability to follow documented procedures and standards in a consistent manner, and has the passion to meet or exceed customer expectations.

Responsibilities:

Write, maintain, patching of applications/code base used to support automation and service delivery. Reviews and monitors systems for availability, error conditions and performance monitors to ensure system stability. Configures, deploys, tests and maintains various network tools to include: Spectrum, Network Authentication (AAA), Intermapper, CA Spectrum, Netdisco and Open Source Monitoring Tools. Follows procedures and guidelines to install, patch, configure, customize, troubleshoot, upgrade, integrate, and maintain systems, software and network connectivity. Provide Service provisioning and Troubleshooting.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent combination of education, certification, and experience.
  • Basic understanding of networking concepts and protocols (e.g. TCP/IP, DNS/DHCP, HTTPS ), related technologies
  • Minimum of two years Linux operations environment with some experience in troubleshooting, installation, configuration of systems in large environments
  • Minimum of two years experience in IT to successfully install, configure, maintain, and support applications and or operating systems
  • Minimum of one year experience with programming languages, scripting languages or automation platforms (Shell Script, Python, HTML, RESTful API, docker container, and automation tools (e.g. ansible, puppet, salt etc)
  • Ability to troubleshoot difficult issues, with a focus on process improvement and/or automation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in technical concepts both verbally and in writing to teams and customers

Desired Qualifications:

  • Proficient with various operating systems, applications and tools such as Linux, MacOS, Mysql
  • Experience with Network Monitoring System
  • Experience with DevOps
  • Experience working with data correlation, analysis and integration with upstream systems

Work Environment:

  • Punctual, regular, and consistent attendance is required
  • Normal amount of sitting
  • Average mobility to move around an office environment
  • Able to conduct normal amount of work at a computer
  • May require to travel to various locations on and off campus
  • Requires on-call availability and rotation outside of normal working hours
  • Requires working during non-business hours and on weekends
  • Required to maintain own high-speed residential connectivity service and mobile communication device
  • Successful candidates must meet the requirements of driving a U-M vehicle and have a valid driver license with less than 7 points
  • Responsible for protecting data and information from unauthorized release or from loss, alteration, or unauthorized deletion; and, following applicable regulations and instructions regarding access to computerized files, release of data, etc. as stated in a computer access agreement which the incumbent signs.
