We are seeking an Associate-level Telecoms Market Analyst. The role will involve working with other Ofcom teams and external stakeholders to deliver Ofcom’s objectives. The job is full-time and based at Ofcom’s Manchester office. The Team
The MI Team Has The Following Priorities For The Coming Year
Research and Intelligence is a team in the Strategy and Research Group in Ofcom. We are responsible for providing first class analysis of UK communications market developments to provide an evidence base for Ofcom’s policy and regulatory work. Our work includes leading the delivery of several Ofcom publications, including the Communications Market Report, Media Nations, Home Broadband Performance, Mobile Matters, Pricing Trends and Comparing Customer Service reports. It is an exciting time to join the Research and Intelligence team and the Strategy & Research Group (SRG).
- To work collaboratively across SRG and with policy colleagues to deliver a programme of internal insight so teams across Ofcom, the Senior Management Team and the Ofcom Board all have the best possible information to inform current and future policy work.
- To continue to develop data management and visualisation to ensure that the information that we collect is as accessible to internal and external users as it can be. We are placing an increasing emphasis on interactive reports in our external publications and use a portal to share data across Ofcom.
- To ensure our external publication programme has maximum impact for the resource we put in. This includes supplementing interactive data reports with focused narrative on key developments / implications.
Key Responsibilities
- Engaging with a wide range of Ofcom teams, projects and reports and providing telecoms-related data and insight to inform our policy thinking.
- Taking responsibility for the collection of one or more telecoms datasets as part of Ofcom’s programme of regular data gathering and analysis.
- Analysing the information received to help understand how people use telecoms services, and the experience they receive.
- Presenting your findings in a concise, clear, and easily accessible way using graphs, charts, well written text, presentations and interactive dashboards.
- Working on external Ofcom reports, including stakeholder management, data collection and analysis and writing sections of the report.
- Ensuring the information we receive from fixed and mobile telecoms providers and third-party suppliers is accurate and robust.
- Undertaking a critical review of the metrics provided to Ofcom by telecoms providers, working with internal and external stakeholders to ensure that they accurately reflect the market landscape.
Skills, Knowledge And Experience
- Previous experience in telecoms or data analysis is advantageous
- Qualification with a bias of Maths, English or Science would be beneficial but not essential.
- Interest in the telecoms market, including an understanding of market developments, growth drivers and key players.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to explain results and issues clearly in writing and orally.
- Excellent organisational skills, with ability to manage and prioritise a range of work, projects and ad hoc requests.
- Highly numerate, with an eye for detail and the patience and commitment to ensure work is accurate.
- Strong skills in Microsoft Excel and proficiency in PowerPoint to manage data sets, analyse results and present data.
- Experience of or willingness to learn data analytical and visualisation tools.
- Understanding of the role of regulation in the communications sector.
